Will I see noticable improvement with this 'upgrade'?

I've decided to stick to a cheaper dual core AMD for now, and upgrade to the 6000+ later.. for now i'm looking at these two;

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ Brisbane 1.9GHz

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+(65W) Windsor 2.0GHz

As I've said before, I currently have an Athlon 64 3500+ running at 2.2GHz stock.

Am I going to see improvement if I go to a cpu clocked less than mine, with dual cores? I do use a few apps at the same time quite often.

EDIT: Do these (retail) come with thermal compound?

The 3600 is 65nm, loses 100mhz and runs on more voltage. The 3800 is 90nm, 100mhz faster and runs on lesser voltage, between the two I would go with the 3800. But going from a single core 3500 I would at least go to a X2 4200 or X2 4400.

The 3600 is also 65w.|

I see that the 4200+ is 2.2GHz, can't I just overclock the 3800+ to get the same end result as the 4200+, since all other specs on the two models are identical (including voltage)?

I ordered the 3800+ 64 X2 and an intake fan, since my case has only the CPU fan right now.

However, if I OC it to 2.2GHz, will it be as if it were a 4200+ performance wise, since all other specs are identical?

I've read about people Oc'ing these and the 3600+ to 3.1GHz, but I'm sure their enviroment is different than mine.. and if 200Mhz isn't going to yield much of a difference, I'll avoid OC'ing for now and purchase the 6000+ a few paychecks down the road :)

Help is appreciated!

Not for sure if the Foxconn has the PCI bus lock or not, but you should be able to get the FSB to 220 for a 2.2ghz without the PCI bus freaking out if it doesnt.

Yea sure go for it, the lower end X2 are known to clock pretty good. Just set your memory back alittle, drop your Hypertransport back to X4 and start raising your FSB a few mhz at a time till you get to 220 and you will have 2.2GHZ. You might have to up your processor voltage by .5
