Will it work?

Well I came here because I have a dilemma, and since it is a hardware one and I am a software kind of guy I just can't figure it out.

My problem is that I have a pretty horrible cpu and motherboard, an amd althlon xp 2500+ overclocked to 2.2 Mhz. Well I found this nice quad core upgrade for my system which I really want to buy.

My case is a Koolance PC2-601BW which I believe is a full size.

So my question to you is will the motherboard fit?
And will I need to upgrade my PSU? I am running a 400 watt psu at the moment with 2 hard drives, 1 dvd drive, an ati radeon 9800 xt video card and a wireless pci adapter. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it because I don't want to hand over money and then end up not being able to install the darn thing.

For running the board and cpu seen at the link there you will be needing a few things alright like a much newer supply to start off with. The present system there sees a 20pin main power connector for the old Socket A board there. A new board requires a 24pin main power connector plus the additional 12v feed for the cpu itself!

The case would still be an atx type while most likely not seeing the air flow you would want like a large front intake fan to bring in cooler room air that greatly helps in seeing all hardware temps lowered. The drives can still go in a new case with the cpu+board.

The other big problem with the link there however is not knowing the make and model of board being shown there for a look at the specifications! What memory? What type of video card is the slot for? along with a few other things. If you are simply looking at the cpu and wanting the board you can find enough Socket 775 models where you can see just what each will support as well as what features each has to offer.

as far as cooling goes I think my water cooling can handle it, I just need to change it since I havent in a couple of months now. Thanks for the input, so a 400 watt psu should be fine, I just need a newer one to be compatible with the motherboard? And I have sent him an email asking for the specific details of the motherboard as I also was wondering if my ram is compatible with his motherboard. But even if it is not I am going to go out and buy some more ram either way since I am running only on 1 gig of it at the moment.

Thank you for your input it is greatly appreciated.

Also my power supply model is a psm-s400w if that is needed, and it says it has a 12 v connector.

Apparently the supply is new enough to have been P4 ready but not Core 2 or quad even not seeing a 24 or 20+4pin connector. That's what to look at on the supply there as well as probably ending up needing a new one anyways.

An old board like yours would likely see DDR266, 333, or 400 memory which is obsolete for any more recent board running DDR2 memory! That is a must item to start with there. DDR3 is now starting to take hold as the standard for the next step.

The actual specifications will show what memory as well as cpus are supported. Once you get a newer cpu the water cooling you have now may not work however since that is being run on an old AMD Socket A system while you are looking at a much newer Intel quad core cpu and a totally new board to go with it.

Alright thanks, I have found a 500w PSU with a 20+4 pin connecter, and as far as ram I am going to purchase some ram either way because I need an upgrade from my 1 gig to like maybe 3 or 4 gigs in ddr3
