Will it work?

Does anybody know, if win7 or vista can be installed on an older laptop with DirectX 8.1?

I have a customer wanting me to install 7 on a Dell Latitude D600, she also wants me to stick 2gb of ram in it as well so it will have plenty of ram. I also made sure to ask if it had a DVD player which she said it did. But it only has Radeon Mobility 9000, which is Direct X 8.1. Looking at the ''minimum'' requirements for 7, it says it needs DX9. So what will happen will it not install at all? Will something just not work? Or? What will happen?

Seems like this laptop is just barely too old to support vista/7, because DX9 is the only thing I can find it's lacking.

The best way to find out is to try to install the Windows 7 on that laptop. If it won't work then tell your customer that she should replace that graphic card (if it can even be replaced because it's a laptop) or to simply buy the new laptop.2 GB of RAM is more then enough for that operating system and from what I have read in your post, the graphic card is the ONLY hardware because of which Windows 7 MAYBE won't work. But to be sure, try to install it first.;) If it doesn't work and your customer doesn't want to change the graphic card or buy the new laptop, then install XP on it and problem solved.

No I won't just try to install it because I will be buying an OEM Win7 home premium for her which is over a hundred bucks. If it doesn't install, what do I do then? Refund her the money for the OS and have to wait for the next customer that wants win7 home premium too.

AND then also her copy of XP will be wiped out as well anyway even if the 7 didn't install.

You can always copy the customer's HDD to some other HDD and then try Windows 7.If it doesn't work, just copy the copied HDD back the customer's HDD.As for the Windows 7,do you know someone who has it so you can borrow it and just try to see if it will install?

The customer stopped contacting me, I guess they didn't like that I told them that win7 couldn't be installed on their laptop

I know right. Thing is it has XP now, and I told her that XP would be best/fastest on the older hardware anyway but she seemed really determined to ''update''. She'll probably get some scam artist to con her out of the money and rip her off somehow. Shouldn't be too hard, I asked her how large the hard drive was and she didn't know that or how to find out either. Oh well. I tried.

She doesn't even know how large her HDD is???LoL man this tells you everything then. She wants Windows 7 because it looks nice. She doesn't understand what is the best for her hardware.Get it?She wants Windows 7 JUST because of the look lol.Girls like everything what is shiny.:DSo no matter how hard you try to explain her,she won't understand or believe you.:D
