Will my OS work?

Okay, so I bought a Optiplex GX620 because I got a really good deal on it. For those who don't know this is the mini tower that has the smaller cd-rom drive. So what my plans are is since I got a good deal on it I went ahead and bought it but this isn't the computer I really want so I am trying to make my own so I purhcased a new tower, motherboard, graphic card (this afternoon), and I'm going to use the hard drive, cpu, ram. But my biggest question is I want to know if I will be able to use my copy of Windows XP Professional that came with my Optiplex computer? Can anyone anwer this and what all can you tell me about it?
 
i dont think you can, because different drivers on motherboard etc., i THINK it may, give it a try...

but then again i doubt it will...

so what you mean is not but yes but maybe, good answer :rolleyes:

theone: if you mean can you install the copy of windows that came with the optiplex then you should be able to as long as the license key has uses left on it. Install it and try, its basically licensed to be used on one machine only so as long as its not installed anywhere else your not breaking any laws.

if you find you install it and it says the license has expired it will give you a phone number to ring, call them and explain and they should give you a working key.

It will work, I have done it myself. If the windows installation gives you the option to install additional drivers decline it. All windows disks are usually standard, they just have a different label.
 
That's not necessarily true. I had tried to use an OEM M PC version of windows with the serial on my Dell and it wouldn't let me use it because the hardware key paired with the XP key.
 
If you're trying to use a Dell-branded OEM XP disc, it will only work on a Dell because the installer looks for proprietary Dell BIOS ID strings. A generic XP disc will work with any PC.

He's trying to use the hard drive that came from his Dell tower with XP on it, and install it in a new computer and have the OS run.

Most likely it won't work, and if it does work, it may be slower then normal.
 
what really makes the difference is if it is an actual OS disc, or a custom recovery disc. Recovery discs will have some sort of thing that verifies the system in the BIOS or something similar. If it is an actual OS disc you can install it.

However, if you read through almost every single EULA, that license of windows is bound to that machine, however what you are doing is technically considered upgrading. So, technically I think it's legal
 
SO when it doesn't work by changing the hard drive if he tries using the Windows disk included there's a good chance that won't work either. So now he's in it for an XP disc.
 
oh i misread the thread, ya just taking a HD out of a working system and tossing it a whole new set of hardware rarely works, in any OS. Exception would be macintosh platform though since its closed.
