will not boot up

I was working on my HP laptop (not plugged in) for a couple of hours and the battery died. This happened once before and I was told to plug it in, then take out the battery and then unplug it and plug it back in. Then turn it on and it booted up. Then I put the battery back in. Now when I did that this time, the laptop will not boot up when I plug it in and turn it on. Am I doing something wrong?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Without the battery attached and the power cord plugged in, is there a light on that shows that its attached to AC power? Most likely you have done some internal damage to the motherboard.

Remove the plug and the battery, hold down the power button for 30 seconds.
Release the power button.
Insert the battery
Connect the power plug
Wait a few seconds
Try to start the computer.

problem solved

As it turned out, I had to give the laptop more time to cool down. When it did, I left the battery out, plugged the laptop in and started it up and it worked. Then I put the battery in and it started charging up. So all in all it must have overheated. It is working fine now. Thanks for all of the advice...
