Will sharpies hurt a DVD+R ?

Is it safe to write on a dvdr? Some have said it is safe but I have also read articles claiming that it reduces the life of the dvdr disc.
People write on discs with markers all the time. Does this at all reduce the 30+years shelf life of a DVD+R?
I remember accessing files just fine on a dvdr after 7 years and it had marking pen on it.

and written with Sharpies. Did hear years ago re-writable disc have the longest
life span.

All the data is burned to the bottom of the disk, a sharpie won't penetrate the cd to corrupt the data. As long as the cd's are stored properly they should last indefinitely.
