Will skype work as game VoiP?

on warcraft I have been using vent in raids and what not, but as i am changing guilds now back to my original one to help with raids i won't have the vent server. We are not prepared to pay further for a vent or ts server, it's just more payments for what is in essence just a game. It isn't worth the money. It is only just worth the £9 per month.

So, i have heard of guilds using skype as a free voip. I know that you can conference call with it which is alot of people all in the same voice conversation, but can you have 10, 25 or even 40 people in the same call and also what is the quality like?

Even if you haven't used it what would you expect from something like this in comparrison to ventrilo or team speak, seeing as how this isn't exactly designed for gamers talking, the conference call is meant more for businesses and what not, it just so happens that it fits a purpose?

I find that Skype calls start to break down when you get a large number of people on them. I have problems with more than 6.

You can get the free teamspeak server and run that off of any host or even your own machine. I think it works a lot better than skype.

How would i go about getting a free one?

most Internet connections are fast enough now to host a vent server on your own computer

Couple of questions here:

1. Are you asaying i can set up a free server with my sytems ip?

2. If so, if i shut down my system will the server go down?

3. If so, would a low end system, a very very old one, be able to run it?

4. How many people would this allow before huge amounts of lag or breaking up begin to happen?

1. Yes

2. If the computer is off the server is down

3. Not sure what it would take to host a voice server but you certainly wouldn't need top of the line

4. Depends on the Internet connection and computer.

I'm not positive but I believe the vent codec is something along the lines of 32kbps so on a 320kbps connection you could host 10 (100 ppl on 3.2 Mbps and so on) ppl talking at the same time but it would most likely be laggy. But of course you need to leave bandwidth for the game. Correct me if I'm wrong

Alright so in theory then:

I have 8 meg dl speed (says speedtest). WoW uses about 500kb/s, i often have internet up so that's...not alot, so i could easily host 25 man server?

You are going to be more limited by your upload speed than your download speeds, FYI.

Yea i didn;t think of that now you mention it, it is uploading not dwnloading ofcourse :P

I am sat on just under 1MB upload, so i should still be a-ok to do it from my network now

It's a bit iffy but it's worth a try

I'm fairly certain you can get the files for a dedicated server from ventrilos website.

Wow won't really need to use too much of your upload.

It only really needs position reported from your computer.

Hosting a server would be a great way to go. I think you got answers to these (yes, yes, yes, a lot), however, Vent would not be the way to go.

The last time I checked, vent limited free users (Hosting their own server) to like 8 slots or something (which would not solve your need for a bunch of people). I would propose teamspeak. Its really similar to Vent. True, its not as "powerful" but if youre just looking for somewhere to talk, how many options do you really need. It beats skype...

I'd say find a low end system/server, load TS Server on it, hide it (garages or closets work nicely) and enjoy.

TS Interface is a lot prettier but Vent has a lot more useless features.

Your other option is to (or find someone willing to) fork over about 4 dollars a month for a vent server. It really isnt that much money.

I've checked on the site and it has told me basically what i already know. This leads me to think that I will only nede to set up a server with my ip and the default port, set a password, server name etc and i'll be set and ready for business. Is this true?

...yup. Low blow on behalf of Ventrilo:

Starting after version 2.2.0, the free version of the server could only host 8 simultaneous connections. If you want more than 8 simultaneous connections, you must now either purchase a license for the "Pro" version of the server, or rent a server from an officially licensed hosting company.

Use teamspeak ;)

$4 per month, so £2.80 ish (70 pents per $1 xchange roughly at the moment)?

Is that for a base line server or is it $4 for any server? If it is that cheap i will try to get everyone to chip in about 10p a month or something. If those prices are true then damn, scrap this post i'll just pay for my own :P I always thought they were fairly expensive but clearly not.

For the TS thing though, can you host a TS server with 25 people on from a home computer? and also if so can you post me a link to a guide for how to do this please?

thankyou very much for your replies everyone
