Will they come out with better 89/95W AMD quads?

My mobo supports a max of 125W for the CPU, but considering I always like to run safe and cool -- and I want to upgrade the GPU without buying a new PSU -- I'm curious as to whether AMD will release a lower power version of the Phenom 9850 or 9950 any time. Is it possible?

I don't want to have to settle for the 9650, currently the best Phenom at 95W or under...

AMD announced lately that newer Phenom X series models will be coming out in January 2009. The fastest probably another 125w model will run at 3ghz there while other models seeing the slower clock and lower wattage rating will accompany the X4 being referred to.

The 125w models are best applied to custom builds seeing a good cpu cooler along with plenty of air flow in general in order to see lower cpu temps. For prebuilt systems especially the mini tower type case often seen going with a 65w to 95w and no more is the practical move.

Supposedly the 3ghz models when first demonstrated ran surprizingly cooler then what many thought they would. There have been a few blogs as well as articles on AMD seeing the 3ghz mark. But for now the next line up of Phenoms is due out in Q1 2009.

I probably should've mentioned that I have a AM2/AM2+ mobo...so the 65/95W CPUs you guys mentioned probably won't work on mine. =/ I've seen some of them, and the good ones seem to be AM3.

Then again, I've heard that 790fx boards will support AM3, though I'm not sure about my 790x...

For AM2/AM2+ boards many will see a bios update available to allow some of the newer models to work. For the Q1 models coming out I think we would both be in the same boat looking for another AM3 board when the time comes.

Besides there's no Vista driver support for the M2N-E at the Asus support site anyways! :P Gee I actually have to count on the MS update site to get some of the board drivers needed! !

ZipzoomFly has the 9750 95W model. But its out of stock right now. The one I ordered defaulted to a lower voltage than the 125W model did. I have heard that they are coming out with a 95W 9850 non BE. But who knows.

Your board is a AM2+ board. It has the 790X chipset. The first two Phenom 45nm. that are being released are AM2+ parts and 125W. The AM3 will be released later after the first of the year. They will have a DDR2/3 memory controller and will be backward compatible to AM2+ boards.

Your board supports the 125W, has a 4 phase power set up. Should run one just fine.
