Will this be decent for gaming?

Howdy, my buddy is building me a PC. It will be for gaming, nothing super hardcore, just like playin FPS on lan and online with buddies. It would be for half life 2 and all the source engine stuff, and all the war games, COD, and all the tom clancy stuff. This won't be a super expensive rig, but it will be upgradeable for a couple years from now when I decide to upgrade. I will be running a amd athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.1ghz cpu, 4 gigs of ram, and a nvdia 9800 gt in 512 or 1 gig. My question is, is that enough "balls" to handle those games on high graphics? Monitor will be a 22" at the most, but I want to play all those games on the highest graphics. No crysis, nothing more than games. I have another computer for everything else. Is that a decent graphics card? The 1 gig is 150 bucks in the brand I want, and 99 dollars for the 512.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4226583&SRCCODE=YAHOODF&cm_mmc_o=QztBBCjCVRqCjCVRqCjCVRq Will that handle the new games coming out on highest settings?and do I need the 1 gig? I want to keep this card for a few years. I will upgrade to a quad core in a couple years, but I'm staying dual core for now. I know people will say go intel, but I'm going AMD for the price. Trying to stay on a budget. Thanks guys,

Ian

PS, pretty much made my mind on the cpu, but want to know if that's a good video card for the price, and how it will handle new games. Thanks again!:)

EDIT: what about this combo?

how hard or risky would it be for me to overclock that cpu? If it's too hard or too risky, i'll get the 6000+ instead.

Thanks bud, I normally shop newegg, I just linked the one nvidia listed on their website. Great website. And alright, any reason not to bother with the 1 gig? I don't see many people running them. That video card you linked looks great, I haven't been looking at any ATI cards!

1gb isn't generally worth it with anything under 24" in the first place, and in my opinion, i wouldn't bother with anything less than a 4870/gtx 280

1 gig, at least for now :P, is only needed when you get into very intensive programs and high resolutions

AMD is always a risk when coming to OCing; so imo I would go with the 6000+ and leave it at stock.

Imo i would go with an intel e5200 and a G31 mobo, but whats your reason for going with amd? Price is about the same or less if you would go with intel, more bang for the buck;)

I want to be able to upgrade my cpu in a couple years to a quad core, I just want to go amd. I'll check that out, thanks man.

? With that 7750 and overclock(even tho that makes me nervous as I've never done that, and don't really know if I want to) or the 6000+ and leave it stock.

The AM2+ 7750BE has the same core as the Phenom. With L1/L2 and 2mbs of L3. The AM2 X2 6000 is the older brisbane core. The 7750 is a BE model, so if you want to overclock you just raise the multiplier and after a certain point you can bump the CPU voltage some if you want to go more. At 2.7ghz it has about the same performance as the X2 6000 does at 3.1ghz.

As far as overclocking, dont have any idea what Nums is talking about. There is no more (risk) overclocking a AMD then a Intel.

This boards in the same price range if your not going to use onboard video.

Really? I had always heard AMDs didn't overclock as well as intel. Well, thats not exactly what I said before.. That is what I should've said though. Sorry :o

True the Core 2 does overclock better and is faster clock for clock depending on the model. Intel has always overclocked better, but the P4 needed it to suck lint out of a bucket. But the Windsor/Brisbane and Phenoms all have about a 3.3ghz limit unless you go nuts with voltage and cooling. But there is no more risk involved. Got this 8750 to 3.1ghz. with 1.3 voltage. 700mhz. not bad for 1.3V. But true Intels do overclock more over there stock mhz then AMD.

Edit.

U2-UFO Cool case man!

Thanks I love it! Its a refreshing change from the same old tower theme. :)

Staying on-topic, I'm exciting to see how the Phenom II's will OC. Hell who knows I might be upgrading my computer sooner than I though :P

Yeah I,m waiting on the AM3 Phenom II. But it does look like these 2 new AM2+ Phenom II 920/940 are going to overclock alot better.

That is kinda odd. It doesnt list the 7750 at all on the CPU support list. But it already has the Phenom II 920/940 bios update. I dont see any reason why the 7750 would not run the original F2 bios. The DS3 was updated for it 3 weeks ago.
