Even though the cpu isnt listed under supported? Although its the same socket?

It may or may not. It may not even boot up with an unsupported processor. Have you bought the processor and motherboard already?

I already own the mobo but want to upgrade my cpu from athlon 64 dual core to the one stated above. I did a bit of an internet search and found this forum post with someone successfully tried the same exact setup as my mobo http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105201

I believe the reason why the phenom II 980 isnt listed maybe because the mobo is discontinued before the cpu was released for retail.

It's possible but I'm sure they would update the cpu support for it. If I were you, I would just go down to the 975 which is supported, there isn't much difference.

I think what ill do is give msi a ring in the morning to be 100% sure

Yeah msi said that I could go unsupported but their would be a possibility of instability and or all four cores wouldnt be unlocked so its best to go with supported so that I would get the full potential of my cpu so I went with the 3.6 ghz phenom II which was a bit cheaper and only 1ghz less so its not that much of a drop.
