Will this processor work?

I just wanted to know if a motherboard fits a certain socket (AM2 for example), does that mean that all processors that are the same socket will work in that motherboard? I just got an Inspiron 531 with an Athlon 4400+, and I wanted to know if I can put an Athlon 6000+ in there. And if it does, is there anything else I need to add with it? I know the 6000+ uses more watts. Thanks for the help.

Go to the manufacturer's site of your mainboard. Often, they have a list of the cpu's they had tested and how well it did. I was once told that it's a good idea to check if the core type is compatible with the mainboard.

I'm not too sure, Dell arent normally up with you doing your own upgrades on Desktops. If it does work I wouldn't think you would need to add anything. Depends what your PSU apmage and wattage is

Depends on what chipset you got. But I think it is OK to replace with AMD Athlon x 2 6000+.

As far as I remember, Athlon x2 6000+ use up to 125W, where 4400+ is probably 89W...
Should not make huge different in your PSU.

Do you think the upgrade is even worth it? I've only had the computer for 1 day, but like any computer nerd worth his name, I want it to go faster. Should I wait for the price to go down, and will it even make a big difference?
