Will this upgrade make a difference?

I currently have a P4 1.8Ghz 256kb cash 400fbs processor in my Dell dimension 8200. If I swap that processor with a 2.4Ghz 512kb cash processor will I get a noticeable improvement? Please take note that I have 1Gig of RD PC800 Ram, so I think I am good on the memory side.

The computer does all what I need well like browsing the web, editing videos, and using Photoshop. The problem is, as always, with games. For example, I can play Company of Heroes 1v1 at a nice speed, but once I play 2v2 the game just slows down. Do you think switching to the 2.4Ghz processor will make a difference in this game for example?

Please share your thoughts, especially if you did this upgrade. Thanks in advance.

Let's hope you have a Socket 478 motherboard and not a Socket 423 motherboard, or else your upgrade option is going to be limited to a 2GHz Pentium 4.

If you do have a Socket 478 motherboard, you might be able to notice a performance difference with a Pentium 4 2.4GHz.

Yes I have a 478 socket. In fact the 8200 series was only made in that socket size. The older 8100 series came with the 423 socket and was limited to 2Ghz. Do you think the extra cash the 2.4 offers will make a difference?

What graphics card do you have? Just want to check that it is your CPU, and not your card, that is bottlenecking.

Good question. I have the Radon 9800 Pro 128Mb. I leave the graphics settings at default so for Company of Heroes everything is set around medium. Though, in case it makes a difference my motherboard is limited to 4X AGP.

I have experimented with graphics settings in C&C Generals and found that medium to high settings cut down on lag and improve the speed of game.

Since no one is responding I guess I need to rephrase my question. What role does cash memory have in improving performance? Will moving up from my current processor with 256kb of cash to one with 512kb make a difference?
