I posted about the chipset in the processor section and now i am sure on that then here goes.

I haven't built an AMD system for years and years and years so don't know what chip goes in what socket and such and I am building a new system for my sister in september. Just to get a rough guestimation for then she has a budget of around £400 give or take £50 or so. Already have peripherals and monitor and OS and all other software so just the base unit and here is what I got so far:

well i can't use newegg, I am from UK, but here is what I have an with your help of telling me the chipset, it should all be good, so here we are, I've got myself:

mobo

Processor

Memory I have another 2x1GB of the same stuff so it will be 4GB, 4x1GB

HDD

Case

PSU

and i will give her the 8600gt from my computer but without the massive heatsink, that won't fit in micro ATX case I will get myself this

then

all together just over £400 for a pretty decent setup, that is around $700 after conversions and all that

I am happy with the system, it is only for uni work and playing the sims 2+3 so would that all work together with it being an AMD board and chip?

Case: Recommend getting a ATX mid-tower. If you change the mobo in future, you would not need to buy another case.

PSU: You probably do not need a 650W... 500W would be fine.

Mobo: Recommend you go for something with SB710/ SB750, you would have a chance to unlock the 4th core.

Video Card: Why you are buying 8800GT at £90 when 4850 is £86/ GTS 250 is £97?

you will like your AMD Setup. cant go wrong with that build! and yes i would get 790x or fx you might get a cheap Quad setup ! worked for me ! you will have to use asus prob for temps after the Quad unlock coretemp and overdrive gets crazy temps after

awesome, so long as it works all goo :D I will have a look at how much the quad core will cost compared to this one and see if she is alright with spending a little more for it.

How well do AMD processors overclock? I have only ever done an Intel processor so not sure how easy or how well they will run on stock cooling.

=EDIT=

Just looked at prices and as for what the system will be used for, it isn't worth an extra £20-£90 for an extra core, the performance increase wouldn't be noticable other than boot and load times, which will be plenty good enough on the set up anyway

they are amazing overclockers now !! I had my 720 to 4ghz with 1.5volts :D (not with 4th core, i can get that to 3.7ghz i just run 1.32 stock volts 3.2 x3 cores for normal use And about stock cooling whats that? j/k i wouldnt know never ran stock on mine.. but it does come with a nice copper base cooler(mine did anyway

case: my sister wants it micro ATX because of the size of her work area and so she can move it around more easily.

PSU I am getting overkill purposefully so I can possibly upgrade in the future if she needs.

mobo her needes will not need quad core until sims 4 comes out, she does nothing but play sims 2/3, stream tv shows, browse internet and do uni work, so it is pointless to do that and have it outdated when she may actually needs 4 cores.

Video card, thankyou VERY much for pointing that out, didn't notice they were that cheap in comparrison, will deffinately change that part of the purchase.

Will it work with an Asus P5N-E SLI mobo though with the motherboard being so old? I know generally any card will work on any board so long as it has the right port, but there have been some issues with compatability of older boards with the newer cards

Id recommend going with a gigabyte mobo, if you look here someone purchased a Phenom II 940, found out it wasnt compatible with his relatively new 770 based asus mobo, just because asus didnt have a bios update for it, while i know people on 680g chipsets with a gigabyte board that support the new cpu's.(Mainly would go gigabyte to "futureproof"...

awesome, thanks for that information, thank god you told me that before i bought it all, you saved me £1 aswell :P
