bout to order my pc parts but i am stuck with memory! the board isa MSI KN8 Neo4-f SKT939 nforce4 chipset dual ddr400 and the memory is OCZ Premier dual channel 2×512mb ddr400 pc3200 cl2.5-3-3-7. will they work together.? all this is on ebuyer.com. thanks
OCZ is an excellent brand of memory. MSI is also a great brand to go with for boards and video cards as well. If you are planning a gaming machine you might want to boost the memory up to 2gb there. Have you decided on a video card at this point? If you stiil have doubts about memory after you could also go with Kingston or Corsair PC3200 dimms.
I kind of give Kingston and OCZ the edge over Corsair for reliability. That is mainly due to pushing hard on a matched pair of CMX512-3200C2s and having a few faults develope as revealed by memtest along with an overheating cpu at the time. When each dimm was tested separately no errors came up. But they would cause a list of problems if run together. When the current pair of 1gb Kingston dimms were thrown in all problems with system locks and sudden system restarts vanished. But that was after pushing hard with some beta testing as well as some gaming. I'm always grabbing different utilities to give them a run. At the same time Corsair is rated high for gaming.
That memory is supported easily. You can even run older memory if needed like PC2700 or even lower to PC2100. But you just cannot mix types there. The memory you are looking should see no problems.
You can mix different speeds as long as they are the same type often. But then you lose the performance value there. The faster memory would be placed in the first slot when mixing. The main problem with mixing is usually seen when there is an incompatability between the different dimms. You wouldn't mix dual sided with a slower or faster single sided memory.
