win 7. folder help

I have win 7 home 64 bit

When I install a 32 bit program it goes into
c:\program files\x86\

And if I install a 64 bit program it goes into
c:\program files\

So I get it all 32 bit programs go into x86 folder.
But I just whent to install iTunes 64 bit and it was going to put it into
c:\programs files\x86

Why and what is x 86 for if not just 32 bit programs?
And if it is for 32 bit programs why put iTunes 64 Bit in it??

Please explane how it works?

iTunes version 9 and 10 are compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 7, if you download a 64-bit app it should be going into "c:\program files\". "c:\program files\x86\" is for 32-bit applications while the other folder is for 64-bit.

Someone posted in another forum having a problem similar to yours:
"This is as it should be. The Program Files folder is for 64-bit programs
and the Program Files (x86) folder is for 32-bit programs. Don't try to
direct these yourself. The iTunes64Setup is simply compatible with 64-bit
systems but is not necessarily itself a 64-bit program. A program like
Roxio Easy Media Creator may have to have one or more 64-bit components,
such as a device driver, to be compatible with 64-bit systems but still
itself be a 32-bit program. Don't be concerned."

Here is another link that would answer your question:

So it seems the iTunes program is 32-bit (which is normal) and it's the 64-bit drivers that get downloaded when you install the 64-bit version.

Difference Between 64-Bit and 32-Bit iTunes:
"The 64-bit version of iTunes is similar to the 32-bit version with additional libraries and drivers that have been compiled to run in a 64-bit environment."
