Win 7 - Network tray icon missing

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Z30 laptop with Win7, and my network tray icon is missing. I can see the icon when I click on customize - turn system icons on or off - but the dropdown menu for this icon is inactive (greyed out; I have the same issue with the Action Center icon).

Some related problems that may help find a solution: When I go to "Control Panel - Network and Internet" and click on "Connect to a Network" nothing happens. Similarly, if I go to "setup a new connection or network - connect to the internet", and click on "wireless", nothing happens and the window closes (if I pick broadband etc, it continues fine). Also in "manage wireless networks" I am unable to delete any network (nothing happens when I click on delete).

I have already tried the classical fix, i.e., delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream registry entries.

Any suggestion?

It really doesn't matter if it says until you restart your computer or not. The fix works when the icon is grayed out. I just did the same thing the day before on a clients machine to restore their icon. If you ran the program and its still not working then there is something else wrong. The only thing you can do is google search the problem and try procedures listed.

Thank you for your response. I can confirm that the windows fix it doesn't restore my icons. It just does what I indicated I had already tried manually: delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream registry entries.

I have of course googled this issue and spent hours trying all the potential solutions I found online but none of them worked ... this is why I am here, for a more specific/professional solution.

Seems you have a windows corruption issue then and the only real way to solve it is to reinstall windows fresh. Stuff happens all the time in windows and it becomes easily corrupted. The simplest malware infection can corrupt it to the point of reinstalling is necessary. I know for some people reinstalling windows is a pain when you have lots of programs and personal data that you want to keep but sometimes you need to do it. Just backup your data and reinstall. You should be back up and running within a day instead of racking your brain trying to figure out how to fix both of these issues.

I tried disabling and re-enabling the network device and updating the network drivers but it didn't make any difference.

John, I know that a fresh windows install would likely solve this issue, but the laptop is new (2 months old) and I recently finished installing all my softwares etc, so I was hoping to find a more gentle fix. Given that I have several specific scientific softwares etc, a fresh install with all personal parameters etc would likely take 3-4 days ...

Corrupted files don't care if the computer is a day old or ten years old, reinstall is sometimes a only option. We get that a proper Windows configuration can take a few days from scratch and this is the flaw of Windows. My recommendation which is my best practice for my wifes Windows computer is to get the machine fully configured and then build a restore image on a usb. That way if she does anything wrong then I can easily get her computer back to the point it needs to be without having to spend all that time.
