i have win 7 on my laptop and i love it and i want to put it on my desktop as well which is running xp. I really need xp for school so i was wondering if i was better off dual booting with xp or does xp mode in ultimate work pretty well?

XP mode is basically glorified (and for the most part unchanged) Virtual PC running a "free" copy of Windows XP. It works well for most applications, as long as you don't need DirectX acceleration.

What do you use XP for in you classes specifically?

If you just need XP for some basic school work (word documents, powerpoints, etc...) I would say download Sun VirtualBox and create a virtual machine through them. That way you don't have to create a dual-booting machine and it will be extremely easy to access from your Win7 Desktop.

I honestly do not have experience with "XP mode" in Windows 7 because I'm still using Vista :/, but I do have experience with using XP and Ubuntu with VirtualBox and have been very pleased with the results.

Yes, VirtualBox is also a great (and free) alternative if you don't want to purchase the Professional or Ultimate editions of Windows 7. Good point! The only downside is you will need another license for XP if you don't already have one.

i have a key i use all the time for xp that i can always go back to and use again. I use xp for running SQL server 2005 and a couple of other programs that i found didnt work on my laptop running win 7. I thought about trying virtual pc unless i get ultimate which might be worth it since i get it discounted through school
