so i am fixing a friends computer and i am amature computer tech... i know what im doing but never cirtified.. anyways he has lost his os somehow and i need to reload it. is there any place i can download it from for free and just use his activation key on the sticker. it is win vista home premium... let me know thanks!

The simple answer is no. At least legally.
You can borrow Vista DVD and his product number, you can use recovery DVDs, if he has any, you can order recovery DVDs, or you can use recovery partition, which every newer computer should have, since manufacturers don't provide OS disks anymore.
 
If its a prebuilt computer from a manufacturer you can order a recovery disk and use your product key and install it that way. There are other ways but they are illegal.
 
Call the maker of the laptop or order recovery cd's online on their website.
