Win Xp "Microsoft Update" CPU 100% AKA SVCHOST.exe

Hi

A while ago I was prompted to upgrade and use Microsoft update, which works exactly like Windows update apart from it checks for updates for all Microsoft products. (Office)

Anyway since then my CPU Usage will max out at 100% caused by one of the SVCHOST.exe process. This happens when ever I access the Microsoft update site or after I log in to windows it self. Thus I have to wait about 5 mins for my CPU usage to drop back to idling (0-7%) this sort of defeats the whole point of having a quick start up!!

I have found this on the web

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916089
And
http://blogs.orcsweb.com/jeff/archi...es-100_2500_-CPU-for-svchost.exe-process.aspx

so for the moment I have just turned automatic updates off, which is a pain cause it is nice to get updated with out having to go the update site.

Anybody else have this?

Do you reckon I should contact Microsoft for the hotfix?

Cheers

Its possible that you have a virus, there is a virus which actually names itself svcchost.exe, unless you're sure its one of the SVCHOST processes, but it still may be a virus if it ocurs on startup

i ahve the same problem except my svchost use up my cpu when i loging in which never happen before

Yes that what i had as well untill:

right well i manged to "fix" it without going to microsoft. all i did was turn off automatic updates. which is not ideal but then i dont really wont to own a computer that even thou boots in under ~1min to have to wait an extra 4min for it to calm down, it sort of defeats the point. well if anyone does pursue the mircosoft hotfix let me know how you get on.

I can safely say i am 99.99% sure its not virus etc realated it seems to be a Microsoft problem which i know other people experience as well.

I have this prob also. Dont know how to fix it. Did the same as you and disabled the auto update. PM or post comment if you find out how to fix this as it is a slight pain in the butt.

Found this on another site. Let us know how it works.

"Finally, a real 'svchost.exe' fix

For those of you who've suffered from svchost.exe, which is used by Microsoft Update, going wild and taking 100% of your workstation's CPU resources, help is at hand.

Redmond plans to offer up some long-awaited patches to updaters in the foreseeable future. But you can get the needed fixes to solve this problem and get your computer back now — without having to disable Microsoft Update and reverting back to Windows Update, or disabling Automatic Updates altogether.

The fix is two-fold. Both of the following patches are needed to fix the issue:

• Step 1: KB 927891. Download the fix from Knowledge Base article 927891 (this link is for Windows XP machines) and install it first.

• Step 2: WSUS 3.0 client. Next, install the WSUS 3.0 client update. An MSDN article on this update is available in Microsoft's MSDN library. A link to the executable is contained near the very bottom of that article, or you can download the executable using this link. (There is no easy download page at Microsoft yet, because this fix has just come out.)

You need this download to install the new Automatic Updates program, which is technically the new WSUS 3.0 client. Even though you may not be using Windows Software Update Services, this download provides you with the new engine that's used by workstations that run Microsoft Update.

You may still see your system spike up to 100% CPU usage every now and then. But we should soon get from Microsoft the much needed, permanent fix to this very vexing issue, which many of us have been fighting for months. The promised patches will be deployed to all customers in the coming months, as discussed in the official WSUS blog."

Oh good I didn't know Microsoft had even recognised that there was a problem.

Tbh I can't be bothered to fiddle around with fixing I’m quite happy to wait for Microsoft to deploy the patch.

As a side note. even thou I have disabled auto updates, which did stop the 100% burn from happen on start-up, I still for some reason can get it after using media player! Which is weird.
