i have recently lost all my data on my other desktop. i burned a windows xp cd and i know it works because i up graded this computer but it doesnt seem to run when my computer first boots up. any answers or maybe how i can re-burn the cd to work as a startup cd

When finished installing Windows did you change the boot order back from the cd rom setting to see hard drive as the first item? If upon the initial system restart once all setup files were copied to the hard drive never saw a return trip into the bios setup Windows won't be able to load along with not seeing the installation complete.

windows is not currently on the computer because whe i deleted everything of the hard drive i tried to install it wit a burned cd that i made and its not working as a startup cd. i'm not sure if i have to burn it special or what

When you mentioned upgrading was that from an older version of Windows like 9X, ME, or 2000? A full version or recovery disk is a bootable disk while upgrades generally only work while booted into a previous version where you start the installer from there.

You may have simply reinstall the prior version and upgrade from there all over again unless you simpy forgot the reverse of what I mentioned before and never set the first item in the boot order to cd rom. The bios is looking at the hard drive for a boot loader of any OS rather then seeing the disk in the drive.
