well, like the title say, its recognized as a DVD rom, but not as a 'writable device' when i go to its properties it says 'burning speed n/a' and everywhere i look it doesnt seem to know the drive is capable of burning, and although windows itself wont recognize it as a writable device a few 3rd party programs will and will let me burn, but all my free trials are now expired, also im starting to need to use programs that rely on windows and what i need to do is fix the problem and stop slapping bandaids on severed arteries. does anyone know what could be the cause of this problem or how i can fix it?

Hmmmm

There are rarely any drivers with DVD-RW drives these days. I have the exact same problem as you and to tell you the truth, I don't know of any way to make Windows recognize it as DVD-RW. However try this burning software: http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

rarely, but not exclusively

also look for a firmware update.

i checked the website for my dvd-rw and there are no drivers newer than 2000 and if I remember right those were for WIN 98 only

check for firmware for what?? the drive or my mobo?
