32-bit allows a (theoretical) maximum of 4GB of RAM, though it depends on the hardware of your computer if you'll see all 4GB or not. Usually it's only about 3.25GB or 3.5GB [like I said, depending on the hardware]) 64-bit allows a maximum of 192GB of RAM. It also has better software integration for multi-core processors. They're the same price, so it's totally up to the buyer to determine what version they want.

Oh wow 4 MB of RAM xD And I though that my 512 MB of RAM is small,but 4 MB....omg lol...that's not enough even for MS-DOS xD
By the way be aware that ALL 32-bit programs you were using will not work on 64-bit OS so be sure that you do have those programs for 64-bit OS too otherwise if you buy 64-bit OS and THEN realize that,you are fuc!ed up hehehe.But there are many 64-bit programs now available so hopefully you won't have any problems.

You are incorrect. All of his 32-bit applications will still work with Windows 7 64-bit.

I currently run XP SP3, how do I find out if its 32 or 64?
And if it is 32 how do I also find out what programs it is going to affect if I go to 64 bit on the new system?

No you are wrong.Not all programs support 32-bit and 64-bit structure...
Some programs support only 32-bit,some support only 64-bit and some support both.So he should be sure that all his important programs also support 64-bit structure.Because if they don't,THEY WILL NOT WORK.
Yes it's true that most hardware supports 64-bit structure,but that does NOT apply for all programs.
As a computer programmer I know what I am saying and I have been dealing with this many times.
Unless he's dealing with 10+ old software he really doesn't need to worry. Only one game I have (Star Trek Voyager Elite force) would not install on my 64-bit system.

You said "ALL" programs. You can still install some 32-bit software on 64-bit, it would just not perform as well. But yes, some older games and programs will not work on 64-bit. I was worried about it when I made the switch from XP to 7, but I have never encountered the problem yet.
But from a novice standpoint, when you say all programs, one might think, say, any game they had before would not work, which would be false.
MOST programs work. It's more than likely it'll work fine.

Programs written in 16bits definately not working in 64 bits OS, make sure You don't have any of these program you need to use. or you can buy the ultimate version and install win xp box in it.
By the way Microsoft office 2007 onenote printer is not working in the 64bit by default, you have to get third party utility to make it work.

just to clarify with this a bit more, the 64-bit or 384 bit or whatever hat you see with gpus from what i know only has to do with the ram for it, so that number doesnt really matter, the faster the number the faster the gpu
You don't have to get ultimate to get XP mode. It's available on Professional.
