Well, on my old computer i wanted to do some experiments so i installed xp, then ubuntu, and now i have laid my hands on an old copy of windows 95. The instructions are very skechty and online isn't helping my questions. So, I came here for help.

My computer is a dell xps from maybe 2005. Anyway, when I boot onto the floopy for 95 it has a menu of drivers i could use:

1:Nec CdRom drivers
2:Toshiba CdRom drivers
3:Hitachi CdRom drivers
4:No Cdrom support

So I always click 1 as it's the only one which really worked. Anyway now the instructions say to type this in: A:\>F:\setupwin95
Of course the A:\> is already there since thats the floopy drive. It doesn't work though and it just says "not a recognized file" or something similar, i don't remember. Anyway, any help is appreciated. Oh, the F:\ of course is the drive that the install disc is in.

Perhaps the hardware isn't supported. Seeing as Win 95 is wayyyyy old most newer hardware ain't goint to work. You might be able to get some things working but other's won't work at all.

i agree with the last post and my question is still why. never the less the only one that was worth a sheet was osr2.

First of all you won't be booting up from the 95 disk like you would with anything newer. A working boot floppy with the correct version of FDisk or an old MSDos 6.0 or 6.22 floppy set will be needed to see the sssmall.... Fat16 primary go on. 95 ran on a 1.4gb HD at one time here.

Also note that any amount of memory over 256mb to 512mb installed may see problems similar to those seen with 98. 64mb was big memory when 95 came out. The version itself however is less involved and will run faster then 98 even some Linux distros!

To get started you can still download the files needed on the boot floppy for the original or Version B seeing the OSR2 release at http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm You won't be able to go larger then about 2.5gb for the primary when going to use fdisk however.

Commands are typed manually at the prompt for seeing a blank! drive realize the first only primary on the drive itself. When booting up with the boot disk remember you need to select the "boot with cd-rom support" option as well.

very good. im always learning.
If ya could i think Windows 98 2nd edition with make your life a lot easier.
All these proggy's are still dos based.
Gotta set up every single driver for each piece of hardware that i could recall. 98 seemed to be in the middle with a happy medium and still a pain in the butt. for me, xp and others made my life a lot easier.
cheers.......Odie

95 wasn't the headache 98SE could be for sure since you weren't expecting to run that much on the older version. You certainly didn't see usb devices in common use there by a long shot! :P

But "those were the days"! when Duke Nukem and Wolf3D saw their popularity for sure along with the original version of DOOM. You had the shut down to dos mode in both versions not later seen in ME explaining one reason why it became an MS flop real fast! :P

your games, ahhh, ....... i remember them well.
would you believe i still have them?
heeehe

those were bulletin board days.
remember?

going back a long ways ya know.

Have you ever heard what the original 8bit version of Duke sounds like in 5.1 surround? DOSBox 6.2 managed to keep that alive even on Vista.
