Winbrand.dll

This morning I started my computer and everything was normal until I went to shut it down. An error message came up saying that winbrand.dll is missing. The computer would not shut down so I had to turn it off manually. I started it up again and it stayed on the boot screen until I clicked delete. I was then told that I should enter select proper boot device and reboot system. After waiting an hour I started it up one more time and IT took me through the whole "Windows did not shut down properly" thing and I started windows normally. It ran smoothly for 15 minutes and then became entirely unresponsive. I finally shut it down for awhile and tried to figure out the problem, but I am not totally sure... any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you:)

do you have its windows disk, if so reinstall seems the easiest solution unless you have important things on there, if so you probably should kook it to another comp and pull the stuff off it then format and install windows

Let's change that from reinstall to repair. If you still have the OS disc used for install, you should be able to repair your system without having to reinstall.

After you do a reinstall of Windows you may want to also check your hard drive for bad sectors.

To schedule a checkdisk on your hard drive in Windows XP do the following:

Start --> Run...
Type CMD into the Run... command box

When the black command box appears type: chkdsk /f /r
Then type Y and press Enter
This will schedule a scan of the hard drive to next time you restart your system.
