I have an computer with a dead mobo running XP. I bought a new mobo and processor put it all together now windows is asking my for activation code. I have no clue what that was or even how to find it. Anyone know what I can do?

this is normal when you change hardware, windows thinks you have installed it on a new computer. you will need your 25-digit installation key. It's also best to reinstall windows when you get new hardware because it causes issues if you don't.

No... it's given to you when you buy windows. if you have an OEM computer (HP, Dell, Gateway etc) look on the computer case somewhere. it should list a key. but it most likely won't work because you changed the motherboard and cpu.

You'll have to buy another copy of windows, preferably windows 7 because XP is a decade old now.

If you find that product key, it should work. mine has worked (for a decade:rolleyes:) and all you need is the internet activation wizard, heck I've even phoned it in, you don't even talk to a person!

I changed hardware last year and went through the same exact thing and windows approved me every time with my one and only key :)

let us know how it goes

It was an HP I bought in 2003. It was in the packet that came with the computer. I hope i can find it after all these years.

I am trying to get this thing up so I can get my computer back from the kids.
