My desktop computer's motherboard died and I'm planning to get a new computer; however, i have window xp installed in that computer. How do i reuse that window xp in my new computer? Is it even possible?

Thanks

If you purchased XP separately and you have the disc, then you can use that to install Windows on your new computer. However if you don't have the installation disc, then you can't copy the OS files over to the new computer, and you are most likely out of luck.

I have the installation disc, but it only allows me to install the xp into one computer. I cant install the xp into my new computer even if i reformatted the computer in which the xp was installed in.

maybe, if you have a windows xp professional w/sp2 it will count down activation. but if you have windows xp professional w/o sp2 it will not ask for activation, but you'll have to turn off automatic updates.

peace, from ya 14 year old system builder

I have installed Windows XP using a OEM license on new computers without any issues as long as you have the installation disk.

did u installed window xp on another system or it is a brand new OEM window xp that you just purchased and have never installled it to a computer yet? I thought OEM window xp can only be installed into one computer and this is why it doesnt work for me.

Is it a Over the shelf OEM or one that came with a compter like Dell. If you bought the OEM yourself, install it on the new computer as long as it is still not on the old computer. If it doesnt Validate call microsoft and tell them the computer got kicked down a flight of stairs and you had to rebuild most of it. Just dont install it on more than one computer.

I have purchased the oem xp seperately. So i should remove the window xp from my old computer first then try to install it to new computer and if it still doesnt work then i should contact microsoft and ask them to unlock it or something?

Well you dont have to remove it, just dont use the copy on the harddrive on another computer at the same time. If you use the drive out of the old computer in the new just format it and do a clean install, if it doesnt Validate it will give you a number to call and they will ask what happen-da-da-da, tell them the motherboard craped out and you had to rebuild they will probable give you a new number you type it in and its validated
