windows 10 updates

hey people,

lately i have been having so much problems with my pc that i dont know where to start, so ill just start explaining, but that might be the reason this story is all over the place. i dont even know what im trying to solve in this thread.

so a week ago my processor overheated, and me as the dumb idiot i am kept playing games with it, until it went wrong. so it died and i had to order a new one, no problems with that, i was already gonna do that, just had to use a little bit of money i saved up for if my phone screen broke.
so i ordered a new cpu, the amd fx-8350 4.0ghz. it is the best my mobo supports with its am3+ socket and 140w tdp.
but while having all this struggle, another problem came around the corner. because while i was using an older cpu to still be able to do stuff in those days of waiting, windows showed up with the update assistant, saying i had to update to the newest security updates, so i let it do its job and later restarted it so it could complete the update. the first 17% of the installation took forever but my pc suddenly restarted itself while updating. i tried this update 2 more times but all tries failed between 17 and 20%.
around this time i also installed the new amd radeon adrenaline drivers for my gpu.
and one of my ram sticks stopped working. i know its the sticks' fault because also my brothers mobo didnt recognize it.

so after 3 days my package came in, with the new cpu. oh i forgot to say i also ordered some water cooling with it, because it seems that the stock coolers of the fx 8000 and 9000 series cool very bad. i built the cpu and cooling in and booted up my pc, and after that some games. while using windows i didnt really notice a difference, maybe a slight performance decrease, but as soon as i started playing games like gta 5 i noticed a good fps increase. but as soon as i started my favorite game, ark survival evolved, things went wrong.

it was a problem i also encountered when using the older cpu for those 3 days, the game was really laggy. not only while playing but even in the home menu. i had to wait 10-180 seconds before the game actually showed me the thing clicked on, or the next frame to say it better. it was even impossible to adjust the game settings, especially sliders for stuff like audio.
first i thought it were my drivers for my new cpu, but all my drivers are up to date. then i thought it were some updates from windows, but those werent even installed because of the fails. then i thought it might be caused by adrenaline drivers, so im trying to downgrade those to an older version now. the problem still occurs when im using an older gpu. but i cant really get a conclusion out ofthat since they are both from the same series

when on the steam forum talking about my games' problem, i noticed that people blamed my cheap budget hardware really fast, while there was really no good reason for that.
then someone said to me that i might have some virus on my pc, causing so much stuff to overheat lately and making the game work not good. but i doubt that since a virus would not just affect the performance of a few games all made with the same engine, yes i forgot to say it had problems running other unreal engine 4 games too.

i know that my amd pc isnt the best pc for running unreal games. and i also know that my cpu doenst give that much performance, but i think it shouldnt give me the lag im experiencing now.

back to the windows problem! since im done talking about ark
that person on the forum who said i might have a virus, also suggested that there is something seriously wrong with my pc, and i fully agree with that.
i cant install any updates for windows at all.
and when i tried to make an installation media with the media tool from windows to reset my pc, the creation of it went well, and the first part of the setup when executing the reset too, but when the reset reached 17%, it gave me an error after a while. no error code or log or something, just an error saying that it had failed. i tried this twice more but it didnt work.

and finally, my pc specs!
cpu: amd fx-8350
gpu: amd radeon r7 370 4gb/amd radeon r7 260x 2gb
ram: 12gb 1600mhz, first 16 (weirdly it wouldnt go higher than 11000mhz)
psu: thermaltake smart pro rgb 850w
mobo: asrock extreme 3 2.0
os: windows 10 education
case: neos bitfenix

temperatures:
cpu idle: 10-20
cpu load: 40-55

gpu idle: 20-25
gpu load: 45-60

Your pc only natively supports 1333mhz ram without changing a setting in the bios. Go into bios and enable XMP profile/setting and it will run at 1600mhz. When was the last time you reinstalled windows? Grab the latest windows 10 ISO from Microsoft here.

https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=691209

download the tool and create the ISO to burn to dvd. Don't just copy the file to a dvd as it won't work, you have to write the image to a dvd.

How old is your hdd? You really need to wipe the drive and install fresh that way. Where in the install does it fail? Are you running bios version 2.6?

the hdd my windows is on is already a few years old, my other one where ark is on is just like 2 or 3 months old.
i already said i was thinking about using the clean command to just wipe my whole hdd, but im afraid stuff will go wrong if i want to install windows after that from the installation media. its the only usb stick i have that has enough space but sometimes my pc doesnt recognize it. and when testing stuff i wasnt able to find the option to boot from that usb stick.

the installations all fail at 17% after being stuck there for a while.

i will check my bios version in a minute

Wiping the drive and reinstalling windows that way would be the first thing to do. Do you have a dvd burner in your system? You have to go into the bios and make usb be first bootable device. Or most motherboards have the option to hit I believe f12 at boot and you can choose what to boot to.

oh thanks. and no my pc doesnt have a dvd burner, wouldnt be really useful because the biggest dvd's we have are 700mb i thought.

Cd's only hold 700mb, DVD's hold about 4.2 gb about 6 times as much as a cd. IF you aren't comfortable doing stuff then get someone involved that knows what they are doing to help you. Back up any important data first. It's possible that the hard drive may be going bad on you as well. But sometimes windows can get so corrupt no updates will install which means the only way to fix would be to do a fresh install.

then i guess my dad was wrong about those cd's and dvd's. but i just did the first few steps to see if it worked, and it worked. but i had to enter my activation code at some point, so will i need a new windows code or can i use the one i already used to activate windows on this pc? because i can only get 2 free copies of windows from school and i already used both.

You can reuse the same key on the same machine if its an OEM license. If full retail version then you can transfer it to a new computer.

Just reinstall using the same key. You can reinstall using the same key as many times as you need. In fact you might not even need a key since its windows 10 and the activation key is stored on MS servers. It should automatically activate when its get to the desktop after install. When you start the install, don't enter a key when it asks. Select I don't have a product key to continue.

i was like a little scared to press enter after typing clean, BUT I FINALLY GOT MYSELF TO DO IT!

then some awkward seconds of silence...

and then THIS showed up:

Virtual Disk Service error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot,
system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume

WTF PC!
i used all my courage on that!

i dont know why it showed up.
i have done this before on that disk, but that was out of curiosity and un-knowledge and then it worked.

pretty annoying since i had to pay to get windows back on there that time, and now i can do it for free but it doenst let me do it

You can't do this while inside windows. Use the install media to delete existing partitions and reinstall windows. There is no need to use the clean command.

sorry for the late reaction but i didnt think about this thread anymore. but yeah, it worked! i just wiped my whole disk since i already didnt need any of the files on it and did a clean install of windows 10 pro. after installation i could immediately start ark since it was on my other disk. and everything worked.
i am now a happy and healthy gamer again, all thanks to you.
