Windows 2000 Help 1st mainboad (Dos) start up.

A friend of mine has a computer that he has not used in a long time. It has windows Xp, when it starts up apperntly the first thing he see's is 1st mainboard. The Desktop does not show up but will start but befor windows can be loaded a black screen pops up instead of windows with a blinking curser. Thanks in advance.
 
I am doing my own hypothesis here. I believe he is in DOS. If he types "Win" won't that start Windows 2000 if the operating system is in working condition?
