Windows 2k Stuck at Start up.

Hello. I have this older Dell I gave to a family member and it has a really small 18.6gb hard drive. So I happened to have a 80gb one laying around with Windows 2k on it. I plugged it in and turned on the computer and it goes as far as the "starting windows" black screen with the loading bar. The bar loads but it won't go any farther. I've looked around for answers. It shouldn't be the hardware because on the other hdd it runs XP really slow but it still starts and you can access everything. I'm not sure maybe the hdd is bad. Any help is appreciated thanks in advance.

simple here. You can not transfer Windows between systems.
It should still run though, but it will say "windows is not genuine". You should be able to clone the XP install onto your new Hard disk though. Or better yet, assuming that it is a PATA drive, just put it in as a slave drive and you can still use both drives.

Ah I see. I will try putting them both in there. So I would put the XP as the master and the 2k as the slave? So then I could boot off the xp hdd and have the space of the 8gb hdd?

yes, your Xp would be set to Master (may be labeled Cable Select or M/CS) and the 2000 drive can be set to Cable select or Slave. Then once you are in windows, completely format the 2000 drive (to get 2k off of it). Make sure it is formated in NTFS, not FAT32.

what model computer is it? May have a spare mount somewhere, or if necessary, you can mount it to the external 3.5 drive bay (assuming that your master drive can be located close enough to work this way.)

Its a driver hang up. Have you tried booting in safe mode? If it does go into add and remove and uninstall all the drivers. Then reboot in regular mode and see if it will boot. If so, then install the new drivers. Will probably have to reactivate it. If its a Retail 2000 it sould not be a problem.

I replaced the floppy drive with the extra hdd. I know she wouldn't need the fdd.

slide it in with the connectors facing in. The screw holes are at the same position. (ive done it before). It would look better if you didn't have a hold or floppy shaped cover (just a flat cover) in there.

Windows 2000 did not work from that 80 GB HDD into that computer in which you put it in because the drivers, registry and so on is NOT compatible with that different system. What you can do to make it work is to simply repair Windows 2000 from that system using Windows 2000 CD disk.On that way Windows 2000 will be installed again and ALL the drivers and registry will be adjusted for that different system and you won't lose any data or any settings.

However...you WILL NEED to install the drivers for that different system in which you put that 80 GB HDD since that 80 GB HDD probably doesn't have them. The drivers you will need are the following:

-chipset/motherboard driver
-graphic/display/vga driver
-audio/sound driver
-LAN network driver (if the computer has that chip of course)
-wireless LAN network driver (if the computer has that chip of course or if you have the USB wireless network adapter plugged in)

Cheers!

Thanks for all the help everyone. I actually ended up putting the floppy back in and putting the hdd right above it. You can't even tell there is another drive installed. I'm formatting it now but it's weird though because in XP with the extra hdd plugged in, there is a d and an e drive. Would that be because it is partitioned into 2 drives? I'm still new with all the computer stuff but I'm learning.

no, its because there is 2 drives. A is the FDD, B is unused (ZIP), c is the XP drive, d is the CD/DVD, and E is the 2000 drive. Its simply just the way windows labels drives when you install them.
