Windows 7 – Is it worth it?

Everybody know that Microsoft just released Windows 7 to the public on October 22. I was always distrustful Vista and therefore stuck with XP Pro, and I might add I'm quite happy with it. What I want to know is, what improvements does Windows 7 have over XP Pro, or what abilities does it have that are better, or what sorts different things do you have to get used to? I've heard that Windows 7 is supposed to be Microsoft's most Mac-like OS yet; which, to be honest, I don't really care that much about, if I would be able to get used to it. I'm the sort of person who is always cautious about the “latest and greatest,” which in this case happens to be Microsoft's latest OS, which probably doesn't have all the bugs ironed out; but I'm just looking for “the word on the street” about this. Thanks in advance.

I dealt with not only the Vista crisis, but also the ME crisis when ME came out and failed hardcore. Let me tell you friend, Windows 7 is completely worth it, just make sure your system is compatible and be amazed at the difference in speed, stability, and shiny little objects that make you go, "Damn Windows 7...Alright!"

I'm using windows 7 right now and I love it. I don't really know what's different between OS's underneath the hood, but overall the OS feels more streamlined and smoother. There are many useful features in Windows 7 that XP doesn't have. For example the snap feature is very useful as you can have multiple windows open and have them easily share screen space correctly.

Snap is the only feature that is better than Windows XP lol. And I accomplished that
in Windows XP using an AutoHotKey scripts.

Windows 7 is just another wallet stuffer for Microsoft.

In my opinion, there isn't $100 in additional value between Windows XP and
Windows 7. So paying that much doesn't justify the price.

I have to say, windows 7 is probably one of the best os Microsoft has brought out since XP. I see windows 7 as a turning point.
Win7 is everything vista shouldve been.

Features and performance wise most likely it is not worth the upgrade unless you are planning on upgrading your hardware. Then some hardware features may only be taken advantage of by a new OS.

If you are going to buy or build a new system then yes, if you are upgrading your current XP Box I'd say save your money as you won't be getting hardly any performance increases.

I remember hearing this somewhere else too; apparently Microsoft corrected a bunch of the junk that was going wrong on Vista. Because I stubbornly clung to XP Pro, I was happily unaware of most/all of said junk.:D

What I seem to be hearing is that if I am going for a new system, Windows 7 is great and I can go for it with confidence; but if, as is the case, I'm content with what I have (this is just to gather info), then don't really bother. Is that about right?

Thanks for the input.

I have use every version of windows form 3.1 to 95 to 98 to ME to XP to Vista. and by far 7 takes to cake... well worth 100$

I'm not a huge fan of the new style task bar. I loved how you could move icons/open programs around, but that's about the extent of it. I don't like the menu system and I don't like the new style "quick launch".

Aside from that, I don't see a tremendous amount different from Vista. The wireless networking seems to be improved, various performance aspects have been improved, but Vista actually keeps up now with SP2.

Finally, it's a new OS. I prefer to stay away from anything new until it's been out to the general public for a while and had some bugs sorted out. I know about the RC and all, but I'm sure more of the common folks will run into problems now.

I'm right with you on that one. That, besides the fact that I'm satisfied with my current laptop (Intel Centrino 2 Duo, P8400 @ 2.26 Ghz, 2.99Gb RAM, 320 Gb HD, Wireless N and Bluetooth), is a main factor for why I wouldn't go for Windows 7 right now.

I've heard that Windows 7 is supposed to have better backward-compatibility than Vista; what have you guys experienced with this? Thanks.

I got 7 the other day, I like it. It's really just Vista with some stuff cut out to improve performance a bit. The new task bar will take some getting used to but I think it's a lot like the office 2007 menu system - crap but then you get used to it and it's way faster/better.

Windows 7+ Vista Version 2. Better but not a lot different. I do not think that there is $100 dollar difference. I use Vista and have gotten used to its idiosyncrasies. At some point I will make the jump but there is not enough of a difference for me to look seriously at Win 7 now.

hmm dont get me wrong,7 is very good but i dont think its worth the full price they ask for it.

I pre-order mine for £44.99 and that seemed more reasonable so i purchased it,If i had to buy at full price though i doubt i would have.

The only reason i wanted 7 in the first place is because

1>Vista is crap and i couldnt stand it anymore.
2>DX10-11 (Even though we dont realy use it yet!)

if it wasnt for me been a gamer and wanting DX10-11,i would not have even upgraded to Vista,I would still be using good old Xp.
