Windows 7/64 keeps locking up on me during bootup

Just lately my system seems to be really hanging on startup. It does the same same thing every time - it starts booting up, and as soon as it gets to the point where the four spots of color whirl around and come together to create the Windows symbol, it hangs - interminably. Sometimes it takes as long as 10 minutes to get past this point and on to my desktop screen, whereas in the past it usually doesn't take more than about 30 seconds from woe to go. I don't know if there's a hardware related issue at play, or if there's a bug of some kind in the system. The only thing of note I can think of that might have had an effect is that I recently trialed Kaspersky and removed it about a week or so ago, though I think my issues with start-up started before that. I'm also at about 90% capacity on my HD, but then again I've been at or around that point for some time so again I don't know if that's the issue.

I've run an anti-virus scan, used Malwarebytes and Spybot, and cleaned up registry to see if that would turn anything up. Nope. Problem is still there.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Have you looked at the windows event logs?

Reboot the machine at a known time, when windows finally boots take a look at any event logs from that time forward and see if there is anything obvious.
