Windows 7 crashing if I do something else while formatting

Just got Windows 7 64 bit. I made the discovery that if I do other things while formatting one of the auxiliary drive, it locks up. I tried to empty the recycle bin, it locked. I tried to bring up Task Manager, it locked.

Running a Core2 Quad, 8 gigs of ram so formatting a drive isn't stressing the system.

I did this all the time with the same machine running XP. Any suggestions as to what's going on?

I've seen weird things happen when you have attached a bad drive.

Disconnect the drive and see if windows behaves correctly.

I agree with johnb35.

If a bad drive is connected and being formatted with let's say...Disk Management,Windows will get crazy sometimes since it is a process in Disk Management which makes "explorer.exe" to behave like crap lol.And for that reason everything is freezed. There is a way to avoid these kind of problems when formatting a bad drive, but you should know some programming in order to make a simple application which uses windows file such as "FORMAT.COM" which formats the drive in a BACKGROUND THREAD.On that way the system will continue working fine while your application is trying to format a bad drive in the background.
That is at least what I did.

Cheers!
