Windows 7--How do you assign folders to partitions?

I just built a system with Windows 7 Home Prem. and partitioned the hard drive into 3 partitions: C: = OS and Apps, E: = Documents, music, photos, downloads, etc., P: = page file.

How do you assign these to each so they get placed there by the system when you create a document, download a photo or music, or add a new piece of software or get windows updates? It's been a while since I last did this (in XP) so I'm a little lost here.

Thanks for your help!

Well first I don't reccommend putting the pagefile in a separate partition on the same drive as Windopes. That will tend to slow down the operation of the machine because the read heads will have to run back and forth between the first partition and the last one on the drive constantly.

If you want to put the pagefile in a separate partition, its better to use a second HDD to do that, and put it in the first partition on that drive, because the first partition always has a higher read speed than the rest. Read speed gets continually lower as you go to the back of the drive; and if you are using a second drive, then you have one set of read heads working Windopes, and another set working the pagefile. Two heads are better than one.

Re WIN 7, I am a complete ignoramus. Know nothing about it so I can't help there; BUT in my experience you can''t setup a routine that saves various filetypes to different places. What you have to do is save each file where you want it on an individual basis.

If you use download helper program such as Internet Download Manager (IDM), you can decide where you will place these specific files in different places :D

User0one,

I did things as you suggested. Thanks for the help! Have another slight issue...Since I eliminated the drive for the page file, I now have roughly 20 GB of unallocated space which I would like to allocated back to my C: drive. Can you help me with that?

i also faced the same issues which you are facing and my friend told me about "ijinni technician" i contacted them at WWW. Ijinni. Com for any issues Just open the website and you can chat with the experts who are Microsoft certified technicians and will fix the issue itself on the spot or u can call them through Skype or contact and for more visit their website as it is very user friendly website. Just click on the chat as the response rate will be very fast from them and they have fixed my issues in no time.
There are 4 ways to reach them.
1. Once you open the website just click on the live chat where one of the IJINNI technicians will be in touch with you.

2. If you have Skype installed in your machines just add the contact "ijinni.com" (free call).

3. You can email at [email protected].

4. You can dial at +1 512 879 3546.

For any issue you are facing with the computer just call IJINNI

WHAA!!! you can post as a guest?!?! I have never seen that. Of course this is spam though.

Anyway

Programs will always ask you where you want them installed, so just choose from there, as for data, if you go to the folders under your username (c:\users\yourusername) you can right click on each folder that you want moved somewhere else, click properties, go over to the location tab, and change it's location there.

Use gparted (free) to add on the space to an existing partition.

This is not the case, actually. Some load to whatever the assigned default location is. Windows makes the default c: It can be changed prior to loading the prog.

I agree with that ^.

OK, so your running out of space. I urge you to find it another way. Keep pagefile on the system partition. Disableing it prevents crash dump files. Other than for an ssd , I see no benifit in disable. Only negatives. I wouldn't do anything more that maybe reducing the size, but that won't get you what your after.
Leave pf on c:
Get another hdd.....
