Windows 7 Issue

recently i've been having an issue with windows 7. when i boot up, the little icon in the task manager indicates that i am connected to the network/internet. however when i try to use any internet applications (firefox, AIM, steam) they cannot connect to the internet. it's happened more than once and i can usually fix it with a couple of reboots. any thoughts?
 
Hmm, this is not really a solution, but it would be faster than a reboot:

What if you unplug your router (I mean electrically)? Wait a few seconds until Windows places a red X on the little network icon, then reconnect the router. That might be enough to make windows realize that it needs to reconnect.

I have my router (and other equipment) plugged into one of those remote-controled plugs that you can buy at any hardware store. I have a little remote control on my desk that I use to turn things off at night (like the router and an external drive that has no power button). If I ever have problems with my internet connection, I first try to fix it by using the remote control to turn the router off and in a few seconds back on. It solves most problems. :)

yea i tried unplugging everything and waiting, unfortunately the problem still persisted, until i restarted.
