My buddy just bought windows 7 and got the downloaded version. He has the disk coming in the mail.

He is currently running windows vista on his laptop. His vista version is 32bit and the downloaded windows 7 is 64bit. It errors every time he tries to download it. Are the 32bit and 64 bit not compatible?

please help so we can email microsoft soon if there is a problem, it would be col to get a disc change.

Is he trying to upgrade Vista to Win7? If so you cannot go from 32bit to 64bit or vice-versa. He must do a fresh install.

Think Microsoft will switch out the downloaded software and the cd that is being sent to him. Or, does he have to buy it all over again?

You need to boot to it, cant install it from within Windows. Either reformat it and do a clean install or just install 7 on top of Vista (so to speak) and it will leave a copy of Vista in a Windows Old file. Either way back up your Data.

Okay awesome, we got it to work, 7 looks great and runs fast.

Now a new problem. He downloaded it onto his backup drive, the D drive and his main is C:

I was going to move the windows 7 folder to the other drive but it wants to overwrite the other windows folder in there, which is the vista one. Will this mess anything up at all?? Or what if it overwrites it and something goes wrong?

I have a 350gb hd, could I just put OS's on that and if something fails, just put them back on??

Yes, this will most certainly corrupt the Vista install. Simply put, you'll never boot into Vista again if you do that.

You should NEVER muck around in the Windows or Program Files folders...

Yes, using backup software, you can create backups of either or both OS's
and store them onto your external hard drive. But, you can't just copy the
files yourself and use them as a backup.
