Windows 7 Official Pricing Released

Well I dont have a OS right now (I am building my first windows machine, I own a mac) so dont I need a prior OS to upgrade from? ie: I need to own a copy of vista or xp to be able to qualify for a $50 upgrade to win 7?

No. All you need is a formatted hard drive. No prior OS needed.

LeopardForest, where are you seeing an OEM edition of Vista being sold with free upgrade to Windows 7? If you can get that deal, I would go for it, seeing as you don't really have a real licensed OS at the moment. The release that Microsoft gave for the pricing and availability was posted originally up over here: http://tinyurl.com/5cub8y
Microsoft's current deals and sales on the software is available over here: http://tinyurl.com/n9dhpa

$50 is too much to spend?

You started this thread ranting about the price.

Yeah, I'd be more inclined to go for a pre-order deal if the ultimate version had one. If I don't get the best of something I always feel like i'm missing out. My philosophy is buy top of the line or not at all. You have to admit though, the prices (not the pre-order reduced ones you mentioned) are a little extreme, and I did have some pretty valid points.

Either one. If you buy the OEM Vista, it will cost you double what the Windows 7 Upgrade will cost, but you'll get 2 OS's.

Not sure what your question is.

Why would it cost him double. I think it'll be the same price either way

The 49.00 Price - is an upgrade price. If he's not upgrading - it's kindof useless isn't it?

If he buys the OEM vista - he'll get a free upgrade - it'll cost around 100 bucks

If he waits and buys Windows 7 OEM - < I'm guessing > it'll cost around 100 bucks if you look at relative price of Win 7 to Vista.

I see it as a matter of preference. I'm using Windows 7 RC - and perfectly happy with it. If I knew I could upgrade the RC to Windows 7 OEM - I'd jump no the 49.00 price - but I've not read anything that confirms I can upgrade the release candidate.

Top of the line is fine - but what do you think the Ultimate Version has - that the other two do not. This link gives all the details of what's included in each version.

Unless you're looking to have over 16GB or RAM - I don't see any need for Ultimate Version.

But - if you need to - Windows Ultimate will handle up to 192 GB of RAM. You wanted the best - you got it :D

Windows 7 Home Premium will be just fine for 90% of computer users.

The extras you get with Ultimate:

*Run many existing Windows XP productivity applications in Windows XP Mode. 2 (Cool...Office 2003 will work...time to give that up anyway)

*Connect to company networks easily and more securely with Domain Join. (Not really something you will need at home)

*Recover your data easily with automatic backup to your home and business network. (If you don't back up your own data...your a moron)

*Help protect your data on your PC and portable storage devices against loss or theft with BitLocker. (Not too worried about that...what are they gonna take...some cell phone pictures of an animal at the zoo? I could see why some people want encrypted hard drives)

* Work in the language of your choice or switch between any of thirty-five languages. (you can get language packs for any version of Windows...they just add it here to make it sound like it is a huge extra. I have 3 different versions of windows running in my house...all of them have English and German running...just a mouse click to change them)

I think Ultimate would be a complete waste of money for a normal computer user...there are a few people who would use the extras.

Vista OEM cost's $109.99 and the Windows 7 Upgrade only costs $49.99.

Sorry if you can't grip the concept.

I'm gripping the concept, but I really can't see the point of selling an upgrade. If Vista and win 7 share so many files then why bother? If that is the case then you can hardly call it a new os and therefore should just sell the complete one and not bother with the upgrade at all. ??? OH, or maybe it's to convince people to get vista oem while waiting for win 7 so that they can then upgrade to 7 and thus, more $$$ for ms. By that logic, I would think that the win 7 RC cannot be upgraded as it was free in the first place....

I don't own Windows XP or Vista - so I have no O/S to upgrade from. I've not read anywhere where an "upgrade " is available to a Release Candidate.

That's not what I was commenting on. You asked how it would cost double and I feel I've explained it the best I can. Moving on...

You don't need an OS to upgrade from. You can "upgrade" from a formatted hard drive...

The Upgrade Pre Order pricing is a bargain, and certainly not "useless" as you said.

Do you have a reference source where I can verify that before purchasing. I'd definitely pre-order for 49 bucks if I know that'll work for my PC.

I've not read that anywhere but this thread topic.

I'm currently running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. Will I be able to upgrade to Win 7 Pro 64 bit for the cheap upgrade price?
No. 32 bit to 64 bit inplace upgrade is apparently not supported.

But a Clean install option then to 64 bit is unknown atm.

You won't be able to "upgrade" to 64bit, just like you can't upgrade older 32bit Windows to 64bit, but yes, you'll be able to do a clean install from the Upgrade discs. They come with both 32 and 64bit versions.

Bodaggit - FYI:

For those looking to purchase the Upgrade - you can not upgrade from a formatted hard drive. You need a legitimate copy of Windows Vista or Windows XP to " UPGRADE " to Windows 7 when it comes out in October.

The Tech Report said:
As one of the e-tailers participating in the promotion, Newegg still offers the Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade for $49.99 shipped and the Windows 7 Professional upgrade for $99.99 shipped. Once the promotion ends, those upgrades will cost $119.99 and $199.99, respectively. So, you know, don't wait around if you're planning to make the switch when the new OS comes out in October.

Again, these upgrades require a legit copy of either Windows XP or Windows Vista. You can grab any edition you want, though, regardless of which version of XP or Vista you're running.

I didn't state that properly:

If you install it, without entering your cd key, it will install a Trial Version of your choice.
As long as you install a Trial of the version you bought, it will upgrade itself from there.

The "Upgrade" considers the Trial install a legitimate copy of Windows.

Same was true for Vista...
