Hello guys:good:

beeing tryin to do research and searchin but i had no luck

I'm running windows 7 64b ultimate edition

I had an old Hdd WS wd800bb 80gb ide HDD lying around so i bought little case and put it together.

Now my problem is that every time I connect The ext HDD via USB windows slows down, the mouse takes long to move around the screen and I have to click like 20 times for a folder to open. I tried the ext HDD on my laptop, thats running XP and no probs at all. At work with win xp no problems either

Do you guys know why this could be happening?

Its probably something with your computer and usb power. What power supply are you using? What are your system specs?

The external HDD has an external power supply

My system is:
i7 2.8Ghz (1156)
P7P55D Mobo
4gb ddr3 ram
700w power supply
Hd5750 Graphic card
windows 7 ultimate

Try plugging your external into a different computer and see if it slows down or has weird symptoms. If it does then you have a bad drive or bad case. Can you actually take the drive out of the case and plug it in normally and see what happens?

tried my laptop with WIN XP and everything good, tried my work pc and also perfect.

The drive was in my previous pc and working nicely, I was running it as a slave.

aslo tried different slave/primary pins at the back and no fix yet

So we know it has something to do with your system and not the drive itself. Did you build this computer or did someone else do it? What brand and model of power supply are you using?

Built it myself:good:

I've tried 3 others external drives and they work k from the usb power, my external drive has its own wall socket power supply, so its even more confusing:confused:

not too sure on the power supply brand, built it last year sometime.

ill try disconnecting 2 internal hard drives from the 3 and see if theres any diff??

Do your other externals have their own power supply? If not, then I'm assuming the power supply for the external is causing the issue.

no, others run from the usb power... but I tried my external hdd with its external power supply on my laptop and at work and it was functioning nicely:confused: could this vary from pc to pc??

I would turn off indexing and see if that helps. It sounds like it may be indexing the external drive.

Some more info:

I have windows installed in an IDE drive and my docs in a 2nd IDE drive. Then I have a 3rd Sata drive for all the movies, etc

I unplugged the IDE my docs drive and switched on the external drive and the mouse did not slow down, only the clicking of the mouse was affected. But i transferred a few files @ 30mb/s

I went on and unplugged the Sata drive but it was the same as the first scenario.

I assume that my pc does not like more than 2 IDE drives??

Is there any Bios setting that i can change for this?

Please download PC Wizard from my sig, install it and run it. Then go to file, save as and click ok, then copy the text out of the file into this thread.

What would be the best memory to install on a Rampage 111 Gene
motherboard for best performance. ie:- what spec and what make?

My CPU is an i7 920.

I am thinking of 6 gig in total and having 6 slots would it be better to
spread this over the 6 slots with 1 gig in each slot?

Your Mobo is a triple architecture ram so use 3x2gb:good:

Mine has 4 slots IIRC and the 1st and 3rd are dual channel architecture.will have to upgrade sometime soon as i can have up to 16gb:good:

theres tons of good ram out there, jus do some research
