Windows 7 vs 8

I really can't decide which one to get! Windows 8 has that metro interface which i do not like, Valve also said how bad it is. Windows 7 seems better and stuff. I was wondering if i get windows 7 would software start to be only on windows 8? The main thing i will use it for is gaming so steam ect. Also will games require you to have windows 8 or will windows 7 be around for a lot longer?

This is getting old really quick.

Once and for all: WINDOWS 8 IS FINE.

Windows 8 does not require metro to work. You can use classicshell or start8 to make it look exactly like windows 7.

As far as valve saying it is bad, they did that far before windows 8 was even released, and none the less at a LINUX devolpment summit none the less. to be exact, they said the windows App store was the reason they were backing Linux anyway. Seen below.

This echoes Valve chief executive officer Gabe Newell’s previous comments on the recently released Windows 8 OS. Newell claimed Microsoft’s latest update to its PC platform is a “catastrophe” that will cause a lot of PC developers to exit the market. The Valve executive and other developers believe Windows’ new app store poses a threat to the open nature of personal computers. Microsoft is taking a walled-garden approach by enforcing full control over which apps make it into its Windows 8 store.

Valve is not on the windows store. This means that it works no different than windows 7 in that respect.

On top of all of that negative press, windows 8 has a new core which is far more efficient than windows 7, and the older NT6 core that it was based on.

If you want to be left in the past, then get windows 7. If you have a brain in your head, then get windows 8.

Okay thanks, Windows 8 64 bit (Standard version) will work with 8gb ram right?

I thought valve was not going to release stuff on windows 8 or something xD

Valve is windows 8 compatible. They freaked out ahead of the release.

and yes. It will work up to 100+ GB I think. Don't remember the exact amount. It's enough that only a server could be at risk of not having all RAM used.

That is a good idea there.

If it is going on the system you have in your sig, then it should do a great job on it.

Windows 8 is fine, I had some technical issues with it but then again I've only used it on one computer. I like the interface to be honest.

I personally use 7.

I suggest you try both out and see which you prefer. Operating system choice is a completely personal choice - nobody can tell you what you must have.

If Windows 8 is cheaper, you may as well get that. I use Windows 7 myself.

i STRONGLY suggest Windows 8.
And before you install Start8/ ClassicShell atop, i suggest try the new UI for at least a week. It's gonna be really frustrating in the beginning, frustrating to the point where you sign up to a tech review website just to complain how hideous it is and how Microsoft design team is led by a bunch of retards, but the magic one liner is "Never give up". It takes some time to appreciate (get used to it, not just 'learn to use it') the beauty of Live Tiles, Apps, and Charms, but IMO, it's a better design. Most people use, at the most, 10 to 15 applications regularly. Once you "pin" those most-used applications on the new start-screen (or the taskbar which is still available in all its glory), you're all set to enjoy the best of both worlds. Windows 8 Modern UI is 100% functional with a keyboard and a mouse!
The only two things which could have been better are :-
1> No "Aero Glass" in Windows 8.
2> Multitasking in Modern UI apps is plain ugly, resulting from the idea of running every app full-screen. However, the desktop is still available, and classic windows applications multitask just as efficiently as they did in Windows 7.
Congratulations on the new computer :)

Agreed. However, I think the lack of Aero glass is good, that design is over 6-7 years old anyway.
