Is windows 7 that much better. I have a new laptop thy has windows 7 installed. It seems to not be running well with alot f extra junk. Could I swap out windows 7 or windows xp?

im using windows 7 pro. I don't think it will make a diff installing XP. If ya wanted then a XP installation from the manufacture would be best choice for your model. If you installed a retail i think ya could BUT...ya need all the drivers.
Should be running ok. Love it. Whats your specs on the laptop?

Honestly I don't think you will see a difference at all installing xp, if it is a brand new computer I think it will be more of a headache to get all the drivers for it.

Don't go back to Windows XP,

When people/businesses go to XP, they're just holding the rest of the world from recieving beneficial software upgrades :) XP is a thing of the past now, in the same boat as Windows 95, and should not really be considered for an operating system unless its a final resort.

Key thing is software management here. You should go into the Programs and Features section of your Control Panel and really evaluate what you need and don't need. Uninstall the crapware you don't need (HP is notorious for crapware imo as I just recently bought a slimline from them and it took me about 45 minutes to uninstall all the crap, Norton/HP software/games/HP Media) I use my third-party progs and I prefer it that way.

Once you've done that, reboot see how you're feeling then. If it's still running sluggish let's evaluate security. Avoid system-intense security systems as Microsoft Security Essentials will get the job done for Virus protection as long as you're not stupid and clicking every banner/ad you see that says you won a free IPOD YAY! If you're going to limewire it up, do so responsibly and always have an active scanner going before you run/play such files.

Last but not least, check your startup items. I imagine it's still Run > msconfig and view startup tab. Evaluate what's starting up with google searches and find out if it's necessary. The less you have run on boot up, the better your overall performance will be.

Final thought: Why can't there be a simple option from buying pre-made computers that says: I don't want you're crappy software, just load the OS for me =)

There is, with desktop build your own. Laptop don't buy from the main manufactures, buy from cyberpowerpc or ibuypower.com. Or as I like to do is a fresh install of the OS (which I usually do cause I am installing a Linux distro, so no more crappy software:))

Specs on the laptop would be helpful.

Like the other guys have said though, a lot of times laptops come with a ton of worthless software that takes up space and, therefore, slows your system performance. Uninstall everything you don't need and then:

-Download Revo Uninstaller and run the "Junk File Cleaner"
-Download CCleaner and run that to clean up hdd
-Download Defraggler and do a disk defrag (or just use the one that Windows provides)

All the above mentioned software is free and can be found easily using Google.

Hi, as someone mentioned already, your problem is all the software that comes preloaded when you buy the machine (unless you already have a virus, then you need to get rid of it first). You can uninstall a bunch of programs (Norton, for example, is taking up lots of resource and is only good for the first six months, then you gotta purchase). See which programs you won't use and get rid of them. IMO, though, you DO need antivirus software and I'd recommend Avast Free. Go to download.com and look it up. Next, since you like XP, you won't need any sidebars or whatever crap W7 runs on its desktop (go to Control Panel - Personalize - Sidebar - Properties, and un-check "Load on startup", or whatever it says). Then download a program called CCleaner (use download.com) and clean your temp files and all that, check your registry (choose the backup option) and disable some of the programs that run on startup. Once you download CCleaner you'll find all these options there. Good luck.
