Windows 7, What ya think?

Blue, I am a Vista fan also. I have installed Win7 on a new computer build and even though I like it, I don't know I would recommend installing it on a computer that's needed for daily use. Even though most people (me included) are impressed with its performance as a beta, it still has some rough edges. Perhaps you could pick up a new hard drive and install it on that, then if you have issues, just re-install your Vista hard drive.

I am currently debating whether or not to go ahead and install Vista on the new computer so I can get some real head-to-head comparisons with my older system. Plus, some of the minor obstacles are a bit of a pain.

Yeah, I mean its safe to say Microsoft screwed up. With as much as people pay for OS's it would be insane to think that they wouldn't feel betrayed or angry. Personally, iv never payed for an OS(Legally), but id be extremely mad if I did.

I think that Windows 7 will not convert the masses from Windows XP, as there is still very little actual end user benefit from upgrading. Most of the benefits are under the hood so to speak. Which are great because a lot of them are actually security increases, but your average user isn't going to know or care about that. In fact, they may actually be irritated by having to have an admin password to install software.

I think that if Windows 7 doesn't have a competitive upgrade to existing Vista users it won't sell in that market either. So many people who adopted it early on spent $150 to $300 for their version of Vista.

I think that Windows 7, while probably way better than Vista, may open up the market to other OSes, and those would most likely be, OS X for sure, Ubuntu, CentOS, and now there are talks of Citrix coming out with an end user OS. Perhaps, SUN, will also come out with something as well. After all, Sun was the company that came up with all the fancy Open GL eye candy you see in all other OSes; it was called project looking glass originally.

When Apple switched to Intel back in mid or end of 2006 they only had a 5% market share, and now they have a 9% market share and it keeps growing. I believe that the Linux market share went up as well but the numbers escape me at the moment.

So since about 2006ish Microsoft has slowly lost numbers here and there across the board. Some tech bloggers are suggesting that Windows 7 will only hurt their sales even more. It is hard to say for sure, but remember you and I and most of this forum aren't your average user. Your average user is what counts in most cases.

I haven't used 7 yet, but my friend has it. Im going to install it on my laptop tonight, Iv got a copy I just need to burn it to a DVD. Ill see if I cant dual boot it just to check it out. Iv used ubuntu for awhile now, but im still pampered when it comes to ease of use. Its just sort of a pain to install games on Linux sometimes. Thats really all I do is game and surf, so windows works well for me. Hopefully it turns out to be good.
 
Well, I probably won't be buying it as I do not support feature limiting or DRM, and it looks like MS did a lot of both in Windows 7.

Read about how ultimate is a separate upgrade for every version, meaning installs are going to be a pain in the ass if you choose to run Ultimate.

I think I am going to keep using OS X and Linux and just keep Vista on one machine for gaming and nothing else.
