Hello. I have a 1 month old acer laptop running windows 7 it was running perfectly, today I installed 3 optional updates from microsoft and during that the computer reseted to a black screen and staid there, when I reseted the laptop windows will not load to my desktop, I get the start up repair window but even after 1 hour there is no fix. It asked me to restore to an earlier point but I did lots of work yesterday and I don't want to lose that. I can go into safe mode but I don't know what to do. Is there a way to fix this? Please help.

System restore will only change system files not your own personal files so go ahead and do the system restore and forget about doing the windows updates. Do you know what updates they were?

I have no idea, there was 1 important update and 3 optional I installed the important one without a problem then when I installed the 3 optional this happened.

The 3 optional were probably drivers. I would just stay with downloading the important updates. If you want to update the drivers, then go to the manufactures website to download them. Don't use windows update as most of the time those drivers are out of date anyway.

Ok thank you very much. I'm gonna try system restore, I really hope I don't lose anything, 1 more quick question if ya don't mind, how often should I backup my computer and do I have to burn the backup to a disc everytime the system performs a backup cause it asks me for removeable media every time. Thanks again.

Just to warn you, a hard drive can go out at any time very unexpectedly. So you should back up your important data whenever you update it or create it. Your backup program is probably set to backup to a writable cd/dvd. You can buy software such as Acronis True Image that will create backup image of your drive and save it on another drive or external so that when your hard drive does crash you can be back up and running within minutes of restoring your image onto a new hard drive.

Ok thanks cause I have it set to back up once a week but that would be slot of CDs/ DVDs or can you just use same cd/ DVD each time?

Depending on how your program works you might be able to set it up incremental backups where it will only back up what was changed after the last backup you made. It might be easier to back up to either another internal hard drive or external. Not sure how well incremental backups will work on cd/dvd's.

ok the restore went great ,i reinstalled the important update, and and these are the 3 optional updates that screwed up the computer,

It was most likely one of the drivers that caused the issue, most likely the video driver. Like I said before, go to your computer manufacturers website to get the lataest drivers. However, if everything is working fine, then there is no need to update the drivers.

The possibility is that the computer is set to go into hibernation or sleep mode when your press the power button, you are using the Korean, Chinese or Japanese version of Windows 7.In any case, to make your computer boot again you have to insert a installation DVD for Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 and boot from it. Restart your computer and boot from your hard drive in normal mode. This should do the trick.
