Windows 8.1 Preview

Going to quickly install Windows 8 in a VM and try it. I don't really want to install it on my main PC which has 8 on it.

Thanks for the link!

From what I can see the start menu in the task bar works like the start menu in the side bar, you can though right click on it and shut down and access some applications from there.

I see a lot more being added to Metro with new added feature and they did make the search in Metro better.

Eh just tried it on an unactivated copy of Windows 8 Pro in a VM - didn't seem to like it. I saw on their site that Microsoft are saying that some ISOs of 8.1 Preview will be released in the next few days, so I think I'll wait for those.

Yeah I am also still waiting for them to add content to the tips and tricks documentation for 8.1 so I can see more of what has been added. They made Metro better which is nice for when I am using Metro but I was hoping for a better start menu button but Microsoft says that more features will keep coming until the final update is released Q4 2013, so maybe the classic desktop will see some old features trickle back into it.

I can't really help till I get home and try it out for myself. Do you have an answer for the question that I had in post #7?

Mine is still booting to metro, anyone know how to boot to traditional desktop?

Remember it's a Preview, so it's not complete. Some things may still be missing.

@Salvage - I downloaded the exe file on an unactivated copy of 8 Pro in a VM, but it wouldn't install - just said 'Your system is not eligible for this update' or something, so I assume you need to be activated.

I have a activated copy of Windows on another machine running so I don't know.

Spirit: Yeah I am expecting more features to come, just was hoping these features would have been present on the preview already.

One guy said in order to chose the desktop you boot into you have to go into the "User Configurable option", must be having some issues because I cannot find this option. Does anyone know where it is hidden?

Edit: I found it, you have to go Control Panel > Task Bar and Navigation, the setting is in there.

That type of customization is a little hard to find but if you right-click on the Taskbar and select Properties, there is a Navigation tab there that lets you select the ability to Boot to Desktop and some other features:

That's interesting, I downloaded the ISO from Technet and there was no mention of Windows Blue there.

This is what the file I downloaded is called:

There is no mention of Windows Blue on the webpage, but the ISO file name mentions Blue as you can see. Got it from the link I posted earlier.

It's installing in a VM now. :)

Anybody else realised that 8.1 Preview now allows you to use your desktop wallpaper as your Start Screen background image?
