I downloaded a student version of the windows 8 upgrade which is suppose to have the 32/64 bit in the same disk. The problem is that when I tried installing it on my mac, it installs the 32 bit. So I installed 64 bit windows 7 and tried to upgrade in windows and get an error saying I need a 64 bit disk. Macs can only support 64 bit versions of windows 8.

Interesting, I will have to look more into this since I bought Windows 8 upgrade from the store and they were two different disc even though they are upgrade versions. In the mean time I know my wife has gotten a lot of MS products from her school, she has also been able to receive the actual disc from her school are you able to do the same or is it download only?

When you buy Windows 8 (or at least the upgrade version in my case) the stupid upgrade utility only buys the bit depth matching what you've already got installed - so if you have Windows 7 x64 installed when you buy the upgrade, the upgrade assistant gets the 64-bit version of Windows 8, and likewise for 32-bit.

I got the download while on a mac so that shouldn't be a problem.

Only logical outcome is that your disk doesn't have 64bit. So you've either mis-read or been mis informed.

Haha I know how you feel mate!
Yea I hate that too,but that is how Microsoft earns more money by forcing people to buy entire OS instead of just an upgrade disk.
Good thing is that I hate upgrade disks. :D
