Windows 98

Recently had a crash and it was my first in years. My computer was bought with Windows XP loaded and has the software key stickered to the case. But the only windows version I have is windows 98. I plan to purchase a newer version on windows as soon as money allows.

For now I am stuck with windows 98. The problem I am having is with installing programs. I sometimes get an error involving administration rights. With windows XP I remember I could just make my log on character the administrator. Windows 98 doesnt have the option as far as I can tell. I have made all the folders shared, if that helps with the details. How do I make myself administrator in windows 98???

Windows 98 is patched with the last available version. Thanks in advance.

Is this a laptop or a desktop? If its a laptop, most likely you had a restore partition to reinstall XP with.

Oh man Windows 98.....I was using that OS for 6 years and even today its definetely my favorite OS!!

Anyway...

--->Do you log on during start up?If so click cancel to log on instead of using your password. If you dont get to log on during startup, click "Start" and see if you have an option to log off.If you do (and you probably do),log off and then press cancel. This bypasses any restrictions your log on may have.Give it a try...

--->In Control Panel, click on "Network",change logon to "Client for Microsoft Networks" (if it's not a choice, click "Add"->"Client"->"Client for Microsoft Networks") and then restart your computer. At logon screen, type in your username and a password. This will be saved from here on out. That should do it.Try now to install those programs you had problems with...

Cheers!

By the way...Windows 98 SE rocks!!!

The older versions were always the best. Simple, easy to use, none of todays fancy stuff that normally slows everything down.

I still know a few people that will not change. still love it.
thats ok........its called old school.

I guess i am the kid here, i like 7 far more than 98, i had all the versions from the betas to the rc to 98se. what i loved was windows 3.1 with the tree branch system... just kidding.. that one sucked, but was great comapared to dos..

Maybe this will sound crazy, but I dare to say that my favorite Windows OS is definetely Windows 98 SE.:D
It might sound weird,but...I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS ON IT for the difference of Windows XP:P

windows 98se sucked for a business environment... I liked 2000 more than 98...i like xp more than 2000... vista no comment... 7 so far so good. Windows 1 was pretty sweet... it was essentialy dos with a mouse.

o yeah to answer this guys question, 98 doesn't have an admin account my guess is the software you are installing isn't compatible with 98. put linux on it.

was a time and place for 98. far better than 95 OSR2 and Windows 3.1 with something like 21 disc. before windows it was dos. nothing else. including no internet but did have dial up with bulletin boards.

windows 3.1 and 3.11 had something in the range of 7 floppies to install, windows 95 was the first windows os with a cd rom version, 1 cd rom or 35 floppies. i think after that it was only cdrom. 35 floppies makes for a long night.

i still have dos 5.0 install discs... why you ask... i have no idea.... i have the manual too lol

Never heard of him

:D I jest

LoL did you just quote yourself =D ?:D

As for Windows 95 with floppies, man that was a nightmare. You would lose entire day just by installing Windows 95 from the floppy diskettes and another 3 days on installing and adjusting drivers...IF you were lucky xD
So thank God that Windows 95 came out on the CD ^.^
Too bad that CD was not bootable, but I made it bootable and now at least I dont need damn floppies to install Windows 95.I can simply install them from the CD ^^
