Windows 98

I run windows 98 on my laptop, and I am having an annoying little problem with log in.

When i turn the laptop on, the windows 98 start up screen comes up, then at log up, an old desktop background shows up with the log on screen (which is useless as you can cancel through it ;) ) and after loading my desktop, my actual desktop background returns.

Why does this first back ground come up and how can i get rid of it???

I think its because you have an active desktop on. If you went into display properties, go through the tabs and uncheck the box that says view as a webpage, you'll get your old desktop back. I believe your system will run faster also with that unchecked.

the problem is that without the active desktop, i can't have other display backgrounds - i.e i can't use my digital photos, only the boring windows 98 ones already on the computer.

do you think it will remove it if i turn active desktop off, re boot a couple of time and then turn it back on again, setting the correct display background on top of the incorrect one? (if that makes sense)

it could be that there are viruses on ur pc like Mac OS X said, or that your pc is running slow because this happened to me when i had a load of viruses on my computer when it was 98, this also happened to my really old pc all the time since I first got it

I finally got around to turning active desktop off. I then re-booted and turned active desktop back on, changing the settings to how i have my desktop looking. Sure enough, no second start up screen when the log on prompt comes!

Thanks for all your ideas :)
