Windows Automatic Installer doesn't work

Windows Automatic Updates keeps telling me it has updates to install onto my windows XP Media Edition Dell desktop, but then it says it can't install. This is happening since It returned form the shop after having problems and now I have spyware I'm in the process of fixing (and trojans moved to AVAST chest).

Anyone know what's up?

private guy. I already spoke with him and he doesn't know what the problem is. I can;t take it back to him, he suggested I just do a fresh install. Put all that I need on another hard drive and reinstall the OS.

I just need to understand what the heck is going on. Why in the WORLD does the windows updates (little yellow shield) not work???
 
Well is your connection to Internet OK? Can you surf?
I'm asking because the updates aren't able when you're using modem connection ( dial up ) and/or if you have no connection.
Is your connection dial up?
 
Anything other is unecesserry. You can't perfrom Windows Updates using a cable modem because the connection is too slow. Trust me on that.

Also, do you have SP1 or SP2? Or do you have Vista?
 
yes I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. There is a few Microsoft website that gives a list of options for issues with Windows Updates. here's one:

I have tried some of the options. But not all. I will try more when I have time.


Game Master. Cable Modem in the US = high speed and as far as I know that's the fastest internet connection you can get. It's certainly way faster than dial up and I've had DSL in the past and I'll never do THAT again if I can help it. Very unreliable! I use a router which is connected to my cable modem (which is Digital Cable and serves my phone and cable TV too). As for connecting to the internet it's perfect, has never given me a problem and fortunately ONE thing I can count on!

This updates issue is a glitch in the windows system for SURE! I've never had a problem with this in the past. I've had my Dell using Windows Media Edition XP for 2+ years. You might remember me from 2 weeks ago or more with other issues that have to do with viruses and stuff. My computer visited a private computer shop which is 2 hours from where I live and he cleaned out the fan which fixed an error issue (so he says) not allowing me any access what-so-ever to the OS. Since I got it back I had some glitches in my Outlook and now this too.
I'm losing my mind because I want it to go back to it's old self! I think I'm going to simply reinstall the whole operating system soon.

What's SP1 & SP2? I haven't had the pleasure of seeing Vista yet. As I mentioned above, I use XP Media Edition.

Would you then post your HijackThis log? The thing is, if your helper didn't clean your PC, we could do it...
If modem is the fastest connection you can get, then there is another problem.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Please then reboot and post another HijackThis log, there is a little bit more to do.
Are you able, by any case , to update?
 
Ok, so, Thanks for the tip on Viewpoint. I removed it. YUK! I hate stuff put on my computer when I don't want it! Unfortunately, still can't do some updates. Strange thing is in my ad remove program it says there were windows updates installed 2 days ago. ??? could it be I don;t have room on this computer for some updates? I just want to reiterate, you do know that there's nothing wrong with my internet and I surf freely and quickly on the cable modem (high speed digital cable), yes?

Hmm...It can be that the updates are actually done, but your PC doesn't report so.
When you turn off the computer, do you ever get the option to turn off(1 update), turn off (without updating )?
