hey, I am going to be honest, i do not have much of a clue to how my computer runs, but i need some help. I got a virus lately and my desktop will no longer boot up windows, but i need to get my files off of my harddrive. i loaded ubuntu, and i have access to my old files, but when i try to copy these files to my external HD it says that i do not have permission to do anything with the external drive. so i am slowly copying my files from a flash drive off my old computer to my external.

is there anyway i can safely salvage my old files to another computer or external HD in a faster way?
please help me, and thanks in advance.

Buy an external enclosure and stick the hard drive in it and hook up to another computer.

Did this the other day and it worked very well.

There is a better way than the two listed above, I have a computer shop and see this all the time and there is a simple 20 dollar tool you can get off of newegg.com that will fix this for you. It is a USB to ATA/SerialATA bridge. The best ones let you plug in every type of common drive, ie. laptop/ultra ata/serial ata. They even come with a mini power supply so you dont need to run off the computers power supply. Hope this helps and if you have any further questions regarding the matter my contact information is on my website and It would be a pleasure to assist you further, hell if your around CT or ever stop by Connecticut sometime I can do it for you.

If you have a password on the account, then you can't get into my documents, as far as i know..... :o
