I am trying to find a free desktop environment for Windows, something kind of like KDE or GNOME. Does anyone know of anything? Thanks for your help.

i just did a google search for "Windows Shells" and found this page:

I have not tried any of these and do not vouch for them one way or another...but you may want to try them.

Great! Oh, one more question, is there a way to restore to explorer?

If you mean, how do you revert back to the Explorer shell if you don't want to use the other one anymore, then you'd have to check the documentation that comes with the new shell and see if they explain how to do it.
As I say, I haven't tried any of these.
I would probably explore that issue before I tried installing a new shell.

You can use the visual style here:
