ok so i have had my new system up and running for about 5 weeks now with now problems. so today i was on my computer and all of a sudden it freezes. nothing is responding so i just reset the power. once i reset the power i get to the logon screen, i logon and then i get a blue screen saying windows has detected a problem and has been shut down to prevent any damage to your computer the under it, it says, unmountable_boot_volume. so i thought my grphix card might have overheated so i try rebooting again about several times with no luck. i try booting with safe mode but still freezes. after about 2 hrs i come back and nothing has changed. any1 no any solutions? thx

no, put the boot disk in and when it starts to get close to where you'd install, it'll say press something to install windows or press r to repair an existing copy of windows, try that. And if you've got alot of stuff you want to save and your drive isn't partitioned, find a friend who will loan you some hard drive space for a little while, if it's partitioned, copy stuff over from one partition to the other. If you really don't want to reformat, you could try resetting your mobo, maybe you'll get lucky and that'll do something, but ot much of a chance. But wait for some other posts to see if someone else thinks of a different solution

wait so in the windows setup can i copy the data from one partition to another?like i have the 300gb seagate barracuda ( the hdd giving me the problems) and i also have an external 160 gb iomega hdd. so in that menu can u backup the data to it?

ok i went to microsoft support site finding ways to solve my problem with windows and when i follow the intructions to go into the recovery console in the windows setup disk i type in chkdsk /r and once it gets to 50% it says there were one or more uncoverable problems and the process stops. and i have already tried using the fixboot command

unmountable_boot_volume
Sounds like the booting drive isnt functioning ... so at the very leats the OS partition is shot. NOw if you've got more than one partition on there then secondary partitions should be ok. Using the recovery console you can have access to the drive. There are restrictions on the type of access you have though which are outlined here
