im not too handy on operating systems but im guessing it could be that explorer.exe is faulty/corrupted drivers causing it to do this.

at the very least id say use sfc/scan now and this will scan all system files and then any incorrect corrupted files it will replace with new files.

how to run this.
open command prompt as administrator, (type run and then cmd if you cannot search it)

type in sfc /scannow

hit enter
-------------
it will then scan all the important windows files and replace any if it finds any bad files.

this usually takes around 5-10 minutes to complete and should solve the problem.

once complete do a full restart of your system and let us know if it solved the problem.

hope this helped! :D
-------------------------
if at any point it stops working while doing the test ie says explorer.exe has stopped working.

turn on pc go into boot options and run in safe mode with command prompt and follow the exact same instructions above.

anything else you can recommend mate i have updated drivers ect. its so random why it is doing it ;/

still not working guys ;/

ok dude, seeing as that didn't work. hmm...

id run memtest and dskchk to check that your hard drive and memory are both ok. as a bad partition (cluster, file allocation etc could cause this)

is it just a specific file when it becomes unresponsive or any file? i.e will it work fine without going into my documents.

could be a bad file allocation on the hard drive if this is the case, run dskchk on the whole drive and not just the main partition.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1. With Windows running, click the Start->Run menu option.
2. Type cmd in the text box and press Enter.
3. A black "DOS box" will appear. Enter chkdsk /f and press Enter.
4. A message will come up telling you it can't run and asking if it should schedule a run on the next reboot. Answer yes.
5. Restart your machine. Chkdsk will run automatically. It won't run on any subsequent boots unless it's interrupted this time

id try that first, if nothing then check the RAM with memtest 4.0 id leave it running for a while, any serious errors should pretty much come up immediately.

thanks mate just done memory test, but i will give that dskchk ago thanks mate

even if you do get errors from your disk, id suggest do what john says.

especially if its an old pc, even few years. if it has never been removed malware can amount over time and cause problems, even damage.
